Some students were told to eat radishes and forbidden to eat the cookies, although a plate of fresh cookies was on the table.

Others were told to eat the cookies and leave the radishes alone. The students were told to taste their assigned food while the researchers left. Then the students were asked to finish a puzzle the researchers had rigged so that it couldn't be solved. CRTC "They were basically told: Keep going until you drop," Bratslavsky told the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association yesterday. Students who resisted the temptation to snack on forbidden cookies only worked on the puzzle an average of eight minutes before giving up.

Those who gave in to temptation were able to persist for an average of 20 minutes. "Our idea Is that self-control is a strength," Bratslavsky said, "so If you exercise it, you're going to exhaust it at least temporarily." United Press International TORONTO Resisting temptation may be good for your soul but it can be hazardous to your mental health. So say psychologists Ellen Bratslavsky and Roy Baumeis-ter, of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The pair drew that conclusion after testing students for self-control by using a plate of chocolate chip cookies and a companion plate of radishes. The students were told they were helping out on a taste test and were asked to show up a NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING 4 If Notice of Public Hearing 1996-9.
