LEONARD E. M'LELLAN Attorney-at-Law Leonard Billdlng. Santa Crux. (Continued from page one.) laws have very much decreased the amount of money formerly received by the counties from the state for aiding the support of the schools. The abolition of the poll tax has made another hole.

Santa Cruz last year, under the now laws, contributed to the maintenance of other schools of the county by losing 5 cents from the 34 cents levy made. EXPENSE GOING UP In order lo intelligently answer the arguments of the board, either favorably or unfavorably, in their request for more money, Chairman Harvey had prepared from the county records a remarkable statement of figures on the increase In the cost of operating high school and the elementary schools in this district for the past period of ten years. Some of the figures and comparisons will bo intense ly Interesting to tho taxpayers. ENORMOUS INCREASE IN OPERATING CHARGES. The figures show that in tho ten years from June 30, 1005, to the same date this year, the increaso in the operating charges of the high school has been 100 per cent, whereas the increase in the pupils lias been GO per cent.

The average salary paid teacher ten years ago was it Is now $1309,59 per month. The cost per pupil in teachers' salaries In 1905 was it. Is now $72.08. The average number of pupils to each teacher is precisely the same now as in 1905. 'Tho average attendance of pupils has only increased from 205 to in the ten years.

The amount paid for maintenance and supplies In 1905, exclusive of buildings, was last fiscal year It was $12 290.10. Where eleven teachers handled 205 scholui'B in 1905, eighteen teachers now teach 327. WHERE GRAMMAR SCHOOL FUNDS GO, Mr. Harvey's statistics of the gram mar schools show that the average salary paid teachers in 1905 was $G73 85; now it is $837.74, for ten months work. Where thirty-two teachers taught 1049 scholars In 1905, It now takes fifty-three teachers to lnstruc 12G7 pupils.

Meanwhile the average of scholars per teacher has naturally fallen from thirty -three ten years ago to twenty-three at this date. The cost per pupil in teacher's Balary has jump- ed from $20.55 In 1305 to $35.03 In this last fiscal year. PRICE ENDORSES REQUESTS, In the past few days County Super intendent of Schools Price has ad dressed a formal communication to the board of supervisors requesting that the special tax requirements of the various school districts be grant ed. Santa Cruz wants $38,131.82 Watsonville wants $7500; various other districts altogether want $3550 a total of $19,181.82. The attitude of the supervisors to.

ward the requests can not be guess ed. Mr. Harvey very frankly admits that certain money is probably need ed, but points to his figures as evi dence that the high cost of living is nothing compared to the high cost of education.
