We wish at this time to voice our sincere appreciation of the manner in which our efforts to provide a service of genuine merit have been received by the community at large. These expressions of confidence and good will are the inspirations which encourage us to plan bigger and better things for the future.

"It teems to be quite generally stood that there has been a definite break la the relations that have so long existed between President Wilson and Colonel E. M. House, his "man Friday." The position held by Colonel House in the administration, while entirely non-official, was closer by far than that held by the secretary of state or any other member-of the cabinet President Wilson, while ignoring Secretary of State Lansing, made Colonel House his personal representative at the meetings with the premiers of France, England and Italy in connection with the peace conference; and abroad, as at home, he was always the president's shadow. But like Wolsey of old, House has dropped -from his place of confidential adviser to the executive. There are many stories- in explanation.

One is that Colonel House, without the president's consent, committed the United States to Paris as the choice of seat for the peaoe conference. Another story Is that House favored recognition of Irish independence, which Wilson opposed. A writer In the New York World declares that Colonel -House's influence with President Wilson declined when the (Flume controversy arose and the colonel took the side of Italy against the president, and even indicated to Premier Orlando his lack of sympathy with the president's attitude, as well as his intention to bring about a change of fhe president's mind, or at least a modification of the president's ultimatum that would work to the advantage of Italy. The same writer aBserts that the president was astounded at the evidence of Colonel House's disaffection. Anyway, although Colonel House returned October 13 from the post assigned him at London by President Wilson, the fact of his coming was not communicated to the White House, and the colonel contrary to his custom, has not visited Washington, nor, so far as can be learned, has he been summoned by the president Sylvester A.

SAN FRANCISCO WOMAN HADN'T SEEN A WELL DAY IN TWENTY FIVE YEARS the soul of honor, for a man who, while preferring the quieter walks, nevertheless was' always ready to serve his community, a man whose word was good in any transaction, a man devoted to his calling and who always offered to younger men an example of faithfulness and accuracy that they might with profit follow. There is many a successful druggist in this state today who owes his start to Sylvester A.

Palmer, who remembers him gratefully for the training he received under his watchful care. Mr. Palmer's record in official life in Santa Cruz Is a record of achievement. His was a steadying hand at council meetings, and he helped to guide the town through many a difficulty. He will be missed by the people of Santa Cruz among whom he has so long lived and whom he has so well served.

We can think of no better tribute to the personal worth of a man than to say that he left a good name behind him when he departed from his old liome town. We can think of nothing -pleasanter than to be able to return to the community where one attended school, grew to manhood, and started business life, and there look every acquaintance in the eye, find a gleam of friendship and a handshake, and know that years of absence have not made one forgotten by old-time friends. Such distinction as this Sylvester A. Palmer enjoyed.
