Howard of Glendale; a step-son, Harvey Howard of Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Forest Fires Still Big U.S. Problem WASHINGTON (UP)-The problem of forest fire control is still far from solution, according to Ernest F. Swift, director of the National Wildlife Federation. Writing in the federation's Conservation News, Swift said sportsmen in many parts of the nation have placed more emphasis on "promoting their favorite recreation" than the "greater civic responsibility" of preventing fire in our forests. Too few sportsmen are aware of the danger of fire to wildlife and other forest resources, he said.

Community prosperity is based on protection of watershed areas, the timber resources themselves and wildlife, he added. Timber is the economic backhone 'of many communities, "the difference between ghost towns and prosperity," he pointed out. Swift suggested that sportsmen's group urge enactment of legislation to perpetuate proper forest management which would involve continued fire protection, insect control, and tree-harvesting and farming. Such action, he concluded will result in healthier forests and, consequently, less need for woodland owners to post "no trespassing" signs. 24 Killed, 130 Hurt In Brazil Accidents RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (UP) -At least 24 persons were killed and more than 130 injured in truck and train accidents in Brazil Sunday night and early Monday.
