But don't feel sorry for BCTV and CHEK. They'll still be carrying some of TV's most popular shows, including ER, Spin City, Suddenly Susan, Murphy Brown, The Nanny, Nash Bridges, fx the Series and NewsRadio.

BVTVCHEK are also taking a chance on 18 new U.S. shows this coming season, mixing them with well-established programs such as W5 and a resurrected Due South. On the surface, the new shows, like Cracker an American adaptation of the popular British cop thriller -look promising. But unless the shows gain a quick foothold in the U.S. marketplace, BCTV and CHEK could be scrambling for new programs in January if large chunks of their programming are cancelled.

What does it all mean? For the average viewer, it means renewal and exciting times as we all try to sort things out. For local television execs, it's a roll of the dice and the potential for ulcers. Watch The Province for full fall schedules later this summer. Faves New station cuts into BCTVCHEK programming et out your II night-planner. 1I5I Come September, your viewing patterns are going to change with some of your favorite shows moving from BCTV to CIVT.

And even U.TV will find competition from the new station as we're going to be given an almost endless diet of old X-Files episodes on Vancouver's newest outlet. As reported earlier in The Province, Vancouver's television scene is about to radically change because of the new channel that airs on Sept. 22. Still to be determined is the exact cable spot CIVT will be given. The most likely change will be the moving of KCTS, the Seattle-based PBS station, from Cable 9 to another slot.

When you add the four new speciality channels that will appear in September, there will be extensive channel-shuffling on cable. The announced schedule for CIVT means that BCTV and CHEK in Victoria (both owned by WIC International) will be losing popular shows like Friends and Melrose Place. And CIVT will be airing Home Improvement, Cosby, Law Order, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Men Behaving Badly, Family Matters, The Drew Carey Show, Ellen and Frasier. The new station will also be airing previous episodes of The X-Files on Tuesdays (10 p.m.) and Fridays (9 p.m.).

The Friday night slot is the original time for AfcVUV the show VS0 before 1 moving season to Sundays where it's had ua increased numbers in the U.S. Bruce Nelson, vice-president of Television West programming for Baton Broadcasting System (BBS), the owners of CIVT, says the Friday night X-Files will generate an audience for the newly syndicated Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict that follows at 10 p.m. You'll also be able to watch the first-year episodes of NYPD Blue, with David Caruso, the original star of the series, on Mondays (10 p.m.).
