to Frt Sat a Sua 5 p.m. to 11 pm. dience. Subdued for the most part, the 10,300 members of the audience seemed content to sit and watch the spectacle. From the moment the band stepped on stage, they let loose with the powerful, hard-driving sound which gained them fame.

For most of the evening the band utilized the talents of the four guitarists creating the solid foundation of sound they are famous for. The intricate layers of metal upon metal leaves other such rock bands behind. Usually laden with massive dubbings causes the impossibility of duplicating such a sound on stage. Boston garnered the on-vinyl reputation of having a great sound with the release of their first, album two years ago.

But their Grandstand concert at the Exhibition Friday night proved they are capable of duplicating their studio sound before an au Live Entertainment on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays "ff. work along with the heavy background guitars and vocal harmonizing the impact of the Individual efforts created an Interesting balance. Vocalist-guitarist Brad Delp provided the group's front. His strong vocals didn't wane as the concert proceeded as is the case of many vocalists. He also managed to control that distinct communication link with the audience.

Always smiling and acknowledging audience' reaction, he gathered an in-imate'Setflng which so few rock bands are able to grasp. But leader-writer Scholz provided the musical genius. He never ceased to amaze with his combination of guitar-keyboard talents. He not only included excellent guitar licks but includes all the electronical wizardry the instrument allows. He managed to delve into futuristic 'Si.

Howev. er, the concert's opening act didn't fare as well. San Francisco's Sammy Hagar and his four-man backup band provided a hard rock set which was monotonus. All tunes sounded identical despite Hagar's tenacious stage presentation and fine vocals. The sound was too loud and boring.

Their 45-minute set simply created a longer wait for the feature show. image. Several of his keyboard solos proved he as adept with this instrument. Bass player Fran Shee-han, Barry Goudreau on second lead guitar and Sib Hashian on drums proved they have the experiance of belonging to such a light and talented band. Their stage presentation was nothing special.

No special effects were used. All members remained stationary for the most part with the exception of Delp who didn't warm up until mid-concert. Their repctoire utilized the success of their First album as well as cuts from their second effort. Don't Look Back. Highlighting the show was Piece of Mind, Don't Look Back and the finale number ft's Been Such a Long Time, each creating noisy audience reaction.

About 1,000 concessionaires will sell food and beverages at the park, about 40 kilometres north-cast of Oshawa.
