TENNIS: AUSTRALIAN OPEN Hingis, Pierce reach finals of Grand Slam event By The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia Named for a champion and raised since birth to become one, Martina Hingis capered Thursday into the final of the Australian Open and a confrontation with 1995 champ Mary Pierce. The 16-year-old Hingis, seeking to become the youngest Grand Slam champion this century, kept her string of straight-set victories going with a 6-1, 6-3 win against two- time Australian Open finalist Mary Joe Fernandez. Hingis, who hasn't dropped a set in the tournament, produced perhaps her finest performance against Fernandez. "I played almost perfect tennis," said Hingis, named after Martina Navratilova and now in her first Grand Slam final. Pierce's journey back from apathy to rapture on the tennis court carried her into the final as she bids to become the first unseeded Grand Slam women's champion in two decades.

Blowing on her fingers as if they were smoking after she rifled winners into the corners, Pierce put on as much of a show for fans as she did a clinic for Amanda Coetzer in a 7-5, 6-1 rout. Through most of the match, the Swiss teen was ready and waiting for nearly everything Fernandez could hit, and frequently caught the Floridian moving the wrong way. Fernandez sometimes looked ready to charge to the net behind deep shots, only to be pinned back on the baseline by Hingis' equally deep returns. Hingis allowed Fernandez to keep service only twice, and saved break points in four games on her own serve. Hingis' only letdown came after she had taken a 5-1 lead in the second set.

Fernandez saved two match points and held for 5-2 in a 10-minute game with five deuces. Then she broke Hingis with a forehand serve return down the line. But Hingis made no mistake on her third match point, breaking Fernandez for the sixth time in the match with a forehand crosscourt that left Fernandez standing in the center of the baseline. The Australian Open champion two years ago, Pierce plummeted to a second-round loser last year when she played so lethargically that her coach, Nick Bollettieri, dumped her after the match. Pierce, whose ranking sank from No.

3 to No. 22, did some serious soul-searching after that, decided to rededicate herself to training and playing, and went back to former coach Sven Groenveld. But a right shoulder injury caused Pierce to miss the U.S. Open, and she spent the last three months of 1996 training. All that effort paid off hugely against the No. 12 Coetzer, who had knocked off top seed Steffi Graf in the fourth round.

SPORTS DIGEST Baseball KANSAS CITY, Mo. Fox Sports Rocky Mountain has reached an agreement to distribute 1997 cable and local telecast of Kansas City Royals baseball games. The regional sports network, which is owned and operated by Fox Sports Net, said Tuesday it completed an agreement for a 30- game package offered on Tele-Communications Inc. cable systems. It also reached agreement with two local stations, KMBC and KCWB, to air 50 home and road Royals games.

The cable broadcasts will reach 275,000 subscribers throughout Kansas, Nebraska and western Missouri. NEW YORK Don Mattingly has been gone for a year, and today made it official, saying goodbye to baseball and the New York Yankees. The greatest Yankees player never to reach the World Series, Mattingly announced his retirement during a news conference at Yankee Stadium. "I guess I wasn't willing to pay the price to be successful," Mattingly said. "At that point I knew it was time to step away." Mattingly said he intended to play in 1997 until a week after Thanksgiving, when he decided to stop working out.

Mattingly, 35, sat out last season when New York won the championship. He began his career in 1982, the year after the Yankees lost the World Series to Los Angeles. That 14-year Series drought was the team's longest since Babe Ruth began wearing pinstripes. The Yankees said they would retire Mattingly's uniform, No. 23.

A six-time All-Star and a nine-time Gold Glove first baseman, Mattingly hit .307 in his career with 222 home runs and 1,099 RBIs. He was the AL MVP in 1985, later became only the 10th player to be named captain of the Yankees and earned the nickname "Donnie Baseball" as a fan favorite in New York. MATTINGLY Basketball COLUMBIA, Mo. Missouri ruled sophomore center Monte Hardge academically ineligible for the second semester on Wednesday. Hardge, a 611, 300-pound sophomore from Jefferson City, was ineligible for the first semester and had appealed a few grades that could have affected his status.

The second semester began Tuesday. Last season Hardge played in 28 games, including three starts, and averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds. Football GREEN BAY, Wis. San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. was charged today with battery for a postgame scuffle in which a heckling fan was punched and another head-butted.

DeBartolo, a companion and two Green Bay Packers fans were issued city citations, Police Chief James Lewis said. Witnesses, including an off-duty sheriffs deputy, told police DeBartolo punched a Packers fan, who then fell backward over a garbage can. The deputy said another man head- butted another fan. Edward Muransky, 37, of Atherton, also was charged with battery, while the fans, Dale Nault and William Scharlas, both of Waukesha, were cited for disorderly conduct, Lewis said. The incident outside a Lambeau Field gate occurred after Green Bay's 35-14 win over the 49ers on Jan.

4. ALAMEDA, Calif. The Oakland Raiders apparently are waiting until after the Super Bowl to name a successor to Mike White, fired as the team's coach a month ago. Reportedly, the Raiders want to interview New England assistant Bill Belichick for the job but under NFL rules can't talk to him or even express interest in him until after the AFC champion Patriots finish their season. So far, the Raiders have interviewed Joe Bugel and Rusty Tillman, both assistants under White, and Philadelphia offensive coordinator Jon Gruden, who oversaw the NFC's top-rated offense.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. The Buffalo Bills hired Dan Henning as offensive coordinator Wednesday and began making plans to change the attack they have run for years. What Henning couldn't do was answer the biggest question surrounding the team as it prepares for free agency: Will 11-year veteran Jim Kelly return as quarterback? "I have to sit down and listen to coach (Marv) Levy, the offensive coaches, the staff that's here and listen to what they say," Henning said. "I'll study film. My input will go to the head coach." NEW ORLEANS He's a two-time MVP.

Now, he's a two-time player of the year.Brett Favre, whose 39 touchdown passes was the third- highest total in NFL history, won the award Wednesday for the second consecutive time. On Tuesday, the Packers' Mike Holmgren won coach of the year. Favre joined Joe Montana (1989, 1990) and Steve Young (1992,1994) as two-time winners. LINCOLN, Neb. Linebacker Terrell Farley, kicked off the University of Nebraska football team after a second arrest for drunken driving, has pleaded no contest to that charge and leaving the scene of an accident.

Lancaster County Judge James Foster scheduled sentencing for March 28. Farley, 21, was kicked off the team after a Nov. 20 incident in which Lincoln police accused him of speeding and failing to stop when they tried to pull him over. He crashed into two parked cars and led police on a 10-minute foot pursuit before they arrested him. Farley pleaded no contest Tuesday to second-offense drunken driving, leaving the scene of'an accident and refusing to obey a police officer's order.

He pleaded guilty to violating his probation by committing the Nov. 20 offenses. He was on probation for drunken driving after an Aug. 30 arrest. The city attorney's office dropped charges of speeding, refusing to submit to a chemical test, driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest.
