Friday, September 17, 1993 Province Sports A79 tlli list 0 filG IllSll By Jack Keating Sports Reporter Bob Lenarduzzi has been forced to change his approach to coaching for Saturday's sudden-death American Professional Soccer League playoff game. Usually more concerned about scoring goals than preventing them, Lenarduzzi has specifically assigned Steve MacDonald and Carl Valentine with the task of marking the two red-hot scoring stars with the Los Angeles Salsa. Lenarduzzi says that centre back Steve MacDonald will be assigned the task of marking striker Paul Wright while the veteran Valentine will have to keep an eye on star Brazilian midfielder Paulinho when the 86ers take on the Salsa in Saturday's APSL playoff showdown at Swangard Stadium at 5 p.m. Paulinho, a 31-year-old former Brazilian international, led the APSL in points (37) and goals (15) while the speedy London-born Wright was second with 13 goals and 33 points. "These two guys are critical to their team performance," said Lenarduzzi.

"Our main strategy will be to shut down Paul Wright. And Wright is successful because he gets great service from Paulinho." Salsa assistant coach Octavio Zambrano calls Paulinho a "world-class player" and Wright "one of the greatest players in the APSL." The five-foot-nine, 170-pound Wright is considered the fastest player in the APSL. Lenarduzzi says fellow centre back Rick Celebrini will also assist MacDonald. "MacDonald will be on Wright and Rick Celebrini will be close at hand. I would expect Carl to be disciplined and have him anchor the midfield and be aware of Paulinho.

Not necessarily man-mark him but be very aware of him," said Lenarduzzi. "It will be Steve and Rick's job to make sure we restrict Paul Wright and when he does get a through ball give him a few yards. Because if we get in a foot race then there's only one winner." Wright, whose family moved from England to San Diego when he was 10, has been an indoor soccer star most of his career, leading the San Diego Sockers to four MISL titles, leading his team in goals and points for four consecutive seasons. "I don't think it will be much of a problem beating them," said Wright, who scored the winning goal against the 86ers at Swangard May 9 and a tying goal in L.A. Sept.

4. "They (86ers) were good during the regular season but this is where it counts. We've got more players who can step forward and bring their play up to another level. I think the 86ers have played their best all season." Of the game, Lenarduzzi says: "It's going to be very close and the team that's the most disciplined will win." Cassaday said a fee for the service has not yet been set, but it will be events from Britain (i.e. cricket) and Asia (track and field).

Maavara said that when the proposal was announced, Seattle Mariners representatives were so intrigued they flew to his office in Toronto for talks. Given the Griffiths family share ownership in both the Canucks and CTV affiliate BCTV, it's a solid bet the new channel also will serve as a regional network for the Vancouver hockey games not already snapped up by CBC or TSN. "There were 38 Canucks games telecast last season," Maavara said. "So that leaves quite a few." THE SHORT END: TSN announced its NHL telecast schedule Thursday. The network picks up six Canucks games, half as many as the Maple Leafs, who are featured 12 times, and three fewer than the Canadiens, who have nine: EXPO-SURE: On CBC's Morn-ingside (9:05 a.m.
