"The Japanese writ tea and printed rlmrncter consists of the Chinese ideographs, those complicated square figures made up of an apparent jumble of zigzags and crosses and ticks and triangles and tails 'the footprints of a drunken fly' and of the original Japanese syllabary, cnlled kana. Of tho former there are in nil, of which perhaps 14,000 constitute the scholnr's vocabulary, and no few-rr than 4,000 are In common dully use, while tho 47 simple letters of tho kana are known to everybody. Therefore tho Jap anese compositor 1ms to bo prepared to plnco In his stick any ono ol over 4.00U different types truly nnnppulling task. 'From the naturo of the problem sov-eral consequences nntnrnlly follow. First, ho must lie a good 'deal of a scholar himself tonwognize nil these Instantly and accurately; secondly, Ids eyesight suiTers fcurfullj', and ho generally wears a huge pair of magnifying goggles, and, third, as It is physically impossible for any one mon to reach 4,000 types totally different method of case arrangement has to be do-vised.

Tbe boy takes this and proceeds to walk nlwut among tho cases till he bus collected each of tho ideographs, or square Chinese picture words, omitting ail tho kana syllable which connect them. Whiio these boys nre thus running to nnd fro unatching up tho types and jostling each other they keep up a continual chant, slngiiifr the name of the character they are looking fur, as they cannot recognize it till tboy hoar Its sound, tho ordinary lower class Japanese not understanding bis daily paper unless bo reads it aloud." CHICAGO RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM.

Tbe Colony of Mean People Who Live Just Outside the Windy City. "I always thought that tho moanost people in the United Status could bo found right in the town of Chicago," said a New York man who has been living in tho Windy City, -'hut I was mistaken, not very much mistaken, though, because the colony of nicnri pooplo that I found live about ten miles outside of Chicago, and most of tliom come into town to business every day, so that while they cannot exactly bo called Chiongoftns still the city Is nioro or less responsible for them. "These men are of course commuters on the railroad. Now, this railroad Issues un ordinary commuter's ticket, which is good for 400 miles of travel. There are 40 spaces marked around tho edge of tho ticket, and each ono Is marked 10, meaning that it Is good for ten miles.

The conductor punches onu of these spaces out with an ordinary round punch for each trip. For a long time tho railroad officials had noticed that receipts were falling off. ComnnitaMou tickets were not selling with their accustomed regularity, and finally tho company put a detective to work. The detective watched the conductors, expecting to find thnt they woro working in with the passengers, but could discover nothing wrong. Tho passengers seemed to bo oil well supplied with commutation tickets, and tho conductors punched them regularly.

It was all a groat mystery until one of the conductors discovered tho fraud. It's bard to believe, I know, but those commuters bad actually been pick in tr rp tho punching after the conductor lelt tho car, stowing them away, and then nt their leisure pasting them In place npnin. It was a simple cheat, but so mean that It's difficult to believe that anybody would stoop to it. 'Tho conductor who cleared up tho mystery iiiado a careful examination of all commutation tickets the next morning. It is an actual fart that ho found three out of every five tickets doctored.

Some of tho commuters made a great play at being indignant when their tickets were taken up, but lt was pure bluff." New i'ork Sun. Specialties In Tallorta-.
