RKPOKT. f- The following is tlie report of the average percentage obtained by the pupils of lue Santa Cruz Public Schools during the semi-annual examinations ending June Ulh, 171.

The examination In Arillinielic and Spelling in Hie higher grades, was in Proccmlon of Corpus Cbrlnti. lAst Sunday there was a grand procession at the Catholic Church, In honor of the Holy Sacrament of the Altar. This procession takes place generally-on Corpus Christ! Day, Which always falls on a Thursday, but for the accommodation of the people is celebrated In many places on the Sunday within the octave. On this occasion the ground outside the church was decorated with trees and evergreens. It was after twelve o'clock when the procession began to move.

After the Cross came the banner the boys of the Parochial School, then dime the gentlemen of the "Santa Cruz Catholic Benevolent Society" wiih new badges, who were followed by over 70 girls of the Sister's School, carrying in their hands a boquet of flowers, and others scattering flowers along the road. Finally came the Holy Sacrament, under canopy, carried by Rev. Francis Sanchez, O. S. accompanied by Rev.

Francis Alvarea, O. S. and Rev. Jr. Adam; Then followed the ladles of the Altar Society, -with lighted tapers.

The Emerson brass band played sweet melodies during Mass, and while the procession was going out from the Church. The ringing orbclls theflringof mortar piece, and the harmonious sound of the band along with the grave voice of the Priests, who were singing the "Tuntu.n Ergo," gave to the scene something of thnt heavenly splendor with which these processions are celebrated In Rome and other Catholic countries. This solemnity was first, ordered to be celebrated In ft Synod held at IJege, in the year I-JIG. Pope Urban IV in 12GJ, fixed It 'on Thursday after the Octave, Whitsunday, commanding It to be observed in the whole Church. Yours, In XI, J.

An.iM. I S. On Saturday (to-day) will be the Anniversary of Plus the Ninth. Tlie first Pope after St. Peter that has seated on the Pontifical throne for '25 years, as St.

Peter did. In celebration of the day the bells will be rung at the Cutliolic Church, the cannon will be fired and there will be au illumination at night in front of the Pastor's residence. On the day following (Sunday the 18th) a solemn "7V Vim" will be sung in thanksgiving to Almighty Uod for having LsoutttA of 1.492 reirlntercd voters. There ate fine residences In the towr, prominent among which that of Gen. While speaking or politics It may be ns well to suy the complexion is llcpubllcan by about 2o0 majority, but by some means the of fices arc about half tilled by Democrats, as for Instance Senator and Shcrifl, Kincald nnd Luthrnp, the former a chum of college days, nnd who Is said to be a lawyer of much legal Of course, the county is-hot anti-Buoth, for It is the home of Mr. In fact, I am not certain that he Is not the most available man for the Hi-publican nominee.

He is making a splendid Mayor, is honest, capable and practical, but is said to be no public speaker and a man who voted for Gov. Halght. Tom Moore, who owns some 1,200 acres of land near Fcscadero and lives In the Twelfth Ward, San Krun'clsco, that ward voting for Senator with San Mateo county, Is said to be the probable Democratic candidate for State Senatorshlp. After listening to the whistle of the Ityomotive and watching the car's as they go sweeping by, something extremely pleasant for the ear and eye of one who lias resided here for fourteen years, our horse is headed for the. town of San Mateo, twelve miles distant ver a road that can not be beat.

The country is good, but unpleasantly rree of houses the cottages of the many, not the homes of the rich. Just before reaching the town that gave name to the couuty we pass a number of the finest mansions in the State. The town Itself Is a perfect beauty, quiet to be sure, but lovely to look upon. Turning to our left we are traveling up San Mateo creek on our way to Half-moon Bay. The turnpike is through a country wealthy in grass, and oak timber that has never resounded to.

the woodman's ax. It is twenty-eight miles from San Mai co to Halfmoon Bay, and as we near the crest of the divide we are astonished by the number of gardens reaching, as they do, to the very tops of the hills. We are greeted ut the top of the irioun- by a cool and refreshing sea-breeze. I.ma expatiate on the beauties of Sunta Crux, lioth of sen, vulley and mountain, know ing, owing to the Infatuation of her clti reus, that wc can nob talk too loud or too much. Pnntn Cruz, town nnd county, is hard to beat on general principles, and as we have to get out of it by some way und by some route we might as well go by the wny of Mountain Charley's lnncarrlnze.

Hearing a good deal about dryness we con" eluded, of course, that the expression applies to wlud und soil, and look with considerable Interest to the passing crops, we mean the standing grain that we are passing. The flint grain to merit attentlnn Is that or C. Drown on the old Oeorge Anthony farm. It Is up to the average and a big thing, financially, this year, and well miy Charley feci, as do most of the old resident Santa Cruzans. (hat this particular pot Is Just one move from the Oardenof Men.

As we- passed Mr. Brown's the morning sun wa Just flooding the land with golden light, and the late Marshal of the Cham pious of the Red Cross, not to be outdone by Ihe bird thnt catches the morning worm, was out In his yard feeding his cocks and hens, and never did his smiling countenance speak more plainly that contentment reigned beneath the roof-tree and plenty spread Ills' board. Hurrying np the easy-graded hill we are soon passing through the old Scott Kahch. Here tilings nr dry, to say the least, and web-footed fowls wander about as If a forty-day deluge would be acceptable. After passing over a rough road we come to the farm of Henry Parsons.

Here every thing like grain, corn and fruit look well, and to the right, over the canyon, is thrifty vineyard thnt roaches to the very tops of the hills. Inlving on through sand and trees we come to the Huekclt Farm, and a little further the Scott Valley, where pre the dairies of Mrs. Krrington and Kdwurd Scott. Mr. Scott's residence, just completed, is a pleasant feature of the valley, and when Ihe road is straightened, as we Judge it soon will' bo from the direct line on which many new gates arc being con- stincteU, we concluded that the spirit ol untci prise was working mightily in these parts.

A few Kioinenl.s more and we are mi the turnpike, road of McKiernan Jt which Is in splendid condition. Its centre threaded by many silver streams thatglide nois-lessly between willow-embowered banks.

Large patches of wild blackberries are said to abound in the adjacent foot-hills, pigeons quails nnd squirrels are not scarce, with here und there deer, with too great a frequency of California ions for tho longevity or "goals." Speeding along we soon find ourselves exposed to a scorching sun, but fortunately an "oak oieniiig" is soon. reached. At the toll gate ti fly cents Is demanded, which amount Is reasonable enough for a horse nnd can Inge. On the summit Is a vineyard, and away in the dim distance to the left is another, property of A. Hatler.

The grapes crown in this neighborhood are mostly of the na tive varieties, and 'are said to be of good quality. The top of the mountain has been reached and passed, and we find ourselves opposite the vineyard of 1). C. Kec-ey, of Soqiiel. The ride down to the Forest House Is quickly made, then Ix'Xing-ton, where that enterprising and popular lioteiistf.

The town Itself Is unusually lively, nnd from Its thrift and few advantage we conclude its inhabitants are men some enterprise. It appears I hat the main support of the place was from the fact that a lumber-yard was established In Its mld-t, the lumber com' i i i ill IIIV tains, but by some miscalculation the lumber Is loaded at the mill for Santa Clara and ol her tints of delivery, giving iytl the go-by.

Wc never before saw such splendid fields of flax as here border the road. Passing down the grade wc find most of the Inhabitants to be native Callfornlans, and soon Spanishtown is reached where they seem to have everything their own way. There Is quite a stream of water running through tho town, the same that is now being conducted by llunio to San Fran cisco. This burg Is In the center of one of the liu'est agricultural districts in the world, has a large three-story hotel, two or three brick stores and a population of some 1U0 inhabitants.

The fogs here urc heavy and the weather cold, and the day wc Were there the sun had not been allowed to shine more than ten or fifteen minutes in the morning. Not a tree of any size was discovered, but grain, the finest we ever saw, was in each field. Pescadero Is eighteen miles ahead. We soon reach the Butano creek, three miles from the town, and the old boundary line of this county. This section is pasture land.

Reaching the top of the hill wc arc within the bounds of Tom Moore's ranch, now devoted to dairying purposes and the raising of potatoes, patches of this Irish favorite stretching np anj down hill on either side. The store of Mr. Purdy is closed, the proprietor probably having gone a fishing, but the hotel of Auguste Koqne is open and inviting.
