There can be no doubt that one of Uie necessities of this city and vicinage is a good drive. All leading watering places have them. People who go to fashionable resorts do to for recreation and amusement.

Several years ago they used to bring their fine horses and equipages to Santa Cruz. Kot so now. They have been here and know that we have no decent "road over which to trot their fine turn-outs. We realize this fact, particularly those among us who have teams of their own; and we have few teams, as there is no road over which there is much pleasure in exercising them. There has been much talk of opening a road from the light-house, following along the beach to the Ocean View Driving Park, where an intersection is to be made with Mission street.

The distance round as mapped out is about five miles, aid it is said the right of way can be obtained without cost. To build the road fourteen hundred dollars are necessary, and to obtain this amount Messrs. Barson aud Scott have circulated a subscription paper the present week. They were meeting with considerable success when last heard from, and we trust our people will come forward with the necessary funds. We do not look on the subscription as a donation.

It is an investment, and one necessary to be made if Santa Cruz is not going to play second fiddle to Monterey. Every taxpayer, wake up and put npl Weather. The heaviest fall of snow experienced In this city (ell on Monday morning last. For the two weeks preceding that date we had delightful weather. On Sunday last a alight shower of rain fell.

During Sunday night and Monday morning more rain, unattended by wind. At 8:45 Monday snow fell, entirely covering the distant hills. Showered during the balance of the day. But little rain fell during Tuesday. Tuesday night was cold, a light rain falling at nine o'clock In the evening, although at the time the earth was covered with frost.

Four horses were hitched to a large wood-aled and a number of eager onea seated themselves among robes and shawls, and away we went to the clamor and clash of oow bells. As we flew by neighbors they ran to see us pass, saluting as with snow ball and shout. At Prof. Allen's farm tbe snow is now tea inches deep. There is two drifts near Mr.

Slaughter's between three and four feet thick. Wednesday It was very cold, snowing a couple of inches the previous night. Such a storm of anow has not been known for some fifteen years.
