By KEITH IDEC STAFF WRITER PATERSON Eastside's game against Hackensack was supposed to be a true test that would determine the Ghosts' readiness to make another deep run in the state boys basketball tournament. Noble-Haywood was 9-for-14 and scored 22 points. to the North 1, Group 4 final. Senior shooting guard DeAndre Noble-Haywood and junior point guard Jetor Brown scored 22 points apiece to lead Eastside (25-2) to its 10th straight win and an opportunity to win its fourth sectional title in five years.

"This shows that last year was not a fluke," said Noble-Haywood, who shot 9-for-14. "We're coming just as hard, maybe even harder this year, because everybody's aiming for us." Eastside, ranked No. 2 in the North Jersey Top 25, will host seventh-seeded and lOth-ranked Passaic Tech for the North 1, Group 4 title Tuesday at 7 p.m. Passaic Tech tested Eastside in a regular-season meeting Jan. 26, a Big North Liberty Division game Eastside won, 46-44, in overtime.

Eastside players and coaches expected similar competition from fourth-ranked Hackensack (23-6), but the Ghosts' tremendous defense led to one of their trademark runs that knocked Hackensack out of the game. Eastside outscored Hackensack, 29-4, from the time there was 1:49 left in the second quarter until a minute into the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 26 late in the second quarter, when Eastside forced two turnovers that led to a pair of baskets during a half-closing, 7-0 run that left the Ghosts in front, 33-26, at intermission. Brown's three-pointer punc- tuated that run and Eastside extended its lead to 1 1 by scoring the first two baskets of the third quarter. Noble-Haywood scored 1 1 points, including three three-pointers, during Eastside's 29-4 run.

Brown, who shot 9-for-ll from the floor overall, added eight points during that stretch and senior power forward Ky're Jackson scored six of his 18 points. Eastside's defense limited Hackensack sophomore swingman Rashard Figures to one point during that run. Figures scored Hackensack's first eight points to get the Comets out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter, but he finished with just nine points. "We just wanted to stop Rashard from getting hot in the third quarter," said Jackson, who also pulled down 11 rebounds. "He's got good shooting range, so in the second half we had to come out, play him a little harder and not give him room for shots." His team's performance encouraged Eastside coach Juan Griles regarding his team's chances of reaching the Tournament of Champions again.

"Last year's team got better as the season went on as well," Griles said. "This team is much better than it was 10-15 games ago, so we are ready to play a lot of good teams in the states. Whether we'll beat them or not, I can't say. But I can tell you that with our style of play, we're ready to play teams that are a little bit better than us and give ourselves a chance to win." Brendan Siegel punched one in from in front in traffic at 14:35, and Connor Ryan scored off a rebound four seconds before the end of the period, sending Ridgewood off for the ice cut as a stunned team.

"Maybe if they don't get those two we can play it a bit tighter, but Randolph played its best game of the year, and we picked a bad time to not play our best," Lucchesi said. The Rams got a pair of Nick Holowko goals in the second period, the second a short-handed tally at 5:24 to pretty much seal the game. They added a trio of goals in the third period. Ridgewood could never get any consistency with the puck and had only 10 shots in the game. Santoliquido finished with 37 saves for the Maroons.

By JIM McCONVILLE SPECIAL TO THE RECORD MORRISTOWN From the opening faceoff it was obvious which team was going to control the game. Randolph pushed the play, owned the puck and spent the majority of the game in the Ridgewood zone. Yet, as the first period was coming to a close, the game was scoreless. If only the Maroons could get to the end of the period and regroup. They could not.

The Rams scored twice in the final 25 seconds of the opening period and that spurred them on to a 7-0 win over Ridgewood in a Public A quarterfinal game at Mennen Arena. "They were so determined," Ridgewood coach Mike Lucchesi said of the Rams (20-2-4). "They just outworked us in every phase. They beat us to every loose puck and controlled the pace of the game." Ridgewood (21-6-2) came into the game unbeaten in its past 14 outings (12-0-2), but it showed little of what built that streak. All except for Alex Santoliquido, who nearly pulled off the impossible in the first period.

He was peppered with 20 shots while the Maroons got only two, and both of those came from outside the blue line. Ridgewood even killed off a late penalty, but the Randolph forecheck and pressure finally paid div ICE HOCKEY Randolph 7, Ridgewood 0 Ridgewood 0 0 00 Randolph 2 2 3-7 Goals (Randolph) Nick Holowko 2, Andrew Tucker, Connor Ryan, Matthew Gaudioso, Brendan Siegel, Michael Slavin. It's just a wrestling match." That was an important lesson for Sebastian against Dugan. The Bec-tonWallington senior was making his second straight appearance in the semifinals and made Sebastian work for every point.

Sebastian was the aggressor, but Dugan used his defense and mat awareness to avoid takedowns inside the circle. Dugan led, 1-0, after two periods. "He had a great game plan," said Sebastian, now 39-2, "I knew he would know what I do everybody knows what I do it's not that hard." What Sebastian does is attack, and he kept pushing the pace, eventually scoring a takedown with 54 seconds left to take a 3-1 lead. Dugan escaped, but was unable to score. "Once I started taking shots and I started to get closer and closer and closer, I felt comfortable," Sebastian said.

"Even though the score maybe didn't show it, I felt comfortable out there and I felt like I was right there to score. And looking at him, I thought he was starting to get tired. I knew I had to be on top of my game today." Sebastian's victory was part of an impressive day for North Jersey wrestlers. The last time the area had four state champions was 1995. Today, it will have five wrestlers in four weight classes, and is guaranteed a state champion in the 195-pound match between Eric McMullen of North Bergen and Razohnn Gross of Don Bosco.

North Jersey was shut out of a gold medal in 2011. This year, three of the five North Jersey finalists are underclassmen, and Sebastian could be the best of the bunch. "I am not making any predictions," Nunziato said. "Can he win today? If he wrestles his best, and if he wrestles the way he can wrestle, he can beat anybody in the country. Anybody." McFadden: Doing the improbable Bosco repeats as state ski champ VERNON Don Bosco Marchiafava, Bobby Wolfan- race was Ridge in a time of Continued from C11 Saturday.

And he's not changing his approach for the biggest match of his life. McFadden beat Delbarton star freshman Christian Innarella, the top seed in the bottom half of the bracket, in the quarterfinals, 1 1-4, and followed it up by knocking off Corrigan, the second seed, in the semis. Next up is top overall seed and returning state champion Brenden Calas of Seton Hall Prep. McFadden can become DePaul's first state champion since 1982. "This is great for the program," De- Paul coach Keith Karsen said.

"We knew coming in he had the potential to do this. But he's not going to be satisfied with just getting to the finals. He wants to win." After his performance in the semis, he looks ready for that step. McFadden jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Corrigan with a low single that he maneuvered into a takedown. He tilted Corrigan from up top with a half for a 4-0 lead that he held until the third.

Then he quickly snatched a bout-securing takedown with another low single before letting go of Corrigan in the final seconds. After winning the match, McFadden jumped in the air, hugged Karsen and DePaul assistant Anthony Leardi, before turning toward his family and pointing in their direction as they wildly cheered. "All the emotions just ran through my head when I won that semifinal match," McFadden said. "I didn't even know what I was doing." He did when he hugged his family. And today he has a chance to make more memories with all of them watching.
