Theiiny writing indicates the ability to focus complete attention on the job at hand. You also show determination to carry each job to completion, as well as careful attention to each small detail. Tf OUR GROUP IS TAKING A POLL I I 7aNYTWN5 rSESS I ANP WE'D LIKE TOKNOVV WHAT wfrtij By A. LEOKUM Solon, who lived about 638 to 559 B.C., was called one of the Seven Wise Men of Greece. As a youlh he travelled and made money in trade, but he also learned philosophy and politics. At that time a few Greek traders gathered together all of the wealth. The farmers and eraftsmmen were in debt.

Many were sold into slavery by their creditors. Solon was asked to help straighten out the situation, fie became chief magistrate of Greece and took many important steps. Solon cancelled all debts for which the body of the debtor ha been pledged as security. He forbade anyone to pledge himself to slavery. He restored civil rights to all those who had been sold into slavery, unless they had committed murder.

He reformed the money system. He prohibited the export of all food supplies, except olive oil. to reduce prices in Athens. He limited the amount of land that any one man might hold, and forbade the display of luxury. He organized the citizens into four classes according to their wealth.

The fourth class, which consisted of the poor, could not hold offices of stae. but was allowed to vote in the assembly and act on juries. As soon as (he refomrs were in force, Solon left on a 10-year voyage. But soon after he left, disagreement Spraggett wins Toronto Open Jv-I II' lrpf 4 km jail IsTa Bridge club Day's own kingside attack was doomed to failure because there weren't enough open lines. M. Kevin Spraggett of Montreal carried off yet another tournament last weekend when he won the Toronto Open with a score of 5i out of 6. But the real surprise of the tournament was Jean-Pierre Barale of Vanier. Although ranked 30th in the 250-player field, Barale could have taken Spraggett's place up to a few moves before the end. Barale started slowly with a draw in the first round.

And. then he won his second game when his opponent, two pawns up, blundered a rook. But he then demolished three in a row: Robert South, myself, and I. M. Lawrence Day.

By strange coincidence, all three of us are or where residents of Ottawa. The odds against a of Barale's rating winning three games in a row against such players are more than 1,000 to one. In the last round Barale played Spraggett to decide first place. Spraggett got a good position in the opening, but Barale defended well, and even gained the upper Disobeyed order saves Battleford a reuse in the state, his new constitution was replaced, and a wealthy Athenian made himself dictator of Greece. Q.5 Both vulnerable, as By BOB BOWMAN When, if ever, is it justifiable for a member of the armed forces to disobey the order of a superior officer? Tradition is along the lines of Tennyson's Charge of tiiu Light Brldgade: "Theirs nut to reason why. Theirs but to do or die." Admiral Nelson was one officer who successfully a command by holding his telescope to his blind eye. There was an instance in Canadian history when an officer of the North West Police refused to obey a command and helped to break the siege of Battle-lord during the 18H5 rebellion.

General Middleton, commanding officer of the Canadian forces, ordered Colonel Herchmer of the NWMP to lake 50 men from Regina to try to rescue the people of Battleford who had been surrounded by Indians for two weeks. Herchmer refused to go because he knew that conditions were impossible. The distance was 200 miles and only half his men had horses. They would have to ford (he South Saskatchewan River, swollen by spring floods and would have been easy targets for the Indians. Middleton then revised his plan and divided a force that was bound for Edmonton.

Half of it was ordered to travel by train to Swift Current and then go to Battleford. It was commanded by Colonel D. Otter and included the 50 men whom hand. As the six-hour marathon drew to a close, Barale first missed a forced draw, and then fell into a lost position. Two players slipped past Barale to tie for second place: Peter Nurmi of Toronto, and Grant Spraggett of Montreal, who both scored 5-1.

Grant is Kevin's younger brother. The two Spraggetts took home over $600 in prizes. Bryon Nickoloff of Toronto, who was the only player to draw Kevin Spraggett, shared fourth place with Barale and myself: we all had 4 points. Among the leading Ottawa players, Jan Krotki had 3 points, while Robert South had 3. And, in case you're wondering, all the prizewinners in the championship were over 20, but under 30, years old.

His first surprise was 12 g3.

Why would anyone weaken the white squares around his king for no apparent reason? Day's idea was to play Rh2, laterally protecting the weak pawn on 12. Whether the unusual Rh2 is good or bad, he should have played it, because after 15 0-0, the move 12 g3 is worse than useless. Barale's classical attack against the kingside forced Day's king to the centre. Day's forces were thereby split into two uncoordinated groups, one on each side, while Barale's major pieces took over the open file. NUIT.
