The champion schooner yacht Nellie arrived In our harbor from San Francisco last Sunday aftornoon after a rather long and sovere trip down the coast, having left San Francisco Saturday morning.

There was little or no wind. On the the yacht, with a largo party aboard, loft for Monterey and remained there a day ami a half, returning here Thursday afternoon. The yacht will remain here about two or three weeks yet. Capt. IE.

Jt, Bowie returned to the city from Monterey, leaving the care of the yacht to his brother and Win. Edgar. The following terse i is came down here: G. J. Bowie, Capt.

H. H. Bowie, Win, M. Edirar, George McLeod, John Van Bergin, Capt. A.

Harloe and Hooporand Henry Smith. The Nellie was accompanied to this place as welt as to Monterey by the schooner yacht Aggie, which, after leaving Monterey, to the sur. prise of those on the Nellie, left for San Francisco, as it was understood that the Aggie would remain here as long as the Nellie. Among the many on the Aggie was Capt. McDouough, O.

F. Willey and brother, and Capt. Mark Harloe. Our Adult Mule Population. The total male population of the United States was, at tho taking of the last Federal census, 12,830,349.

Of these 8,270,518 were native whites, 3,072,487 foreign whites and 1,487,344 colored, including Indian and Chinese. The African element In the colored population is mostly native, while the Chinese are wholly foreign. The significance of these figures is found in the proportion of native whites to foreign. Tills difference would be more marked In a classification of the entire population, as the children of the foreign born adults would be included among the native. There seems, therefore, very little basis for the apprehension sometimes expressed that the foreign horn popu lation will ever predominate iu num ber or influence.

In fact, when these figures are examitied, it seems Incredible that such an apprehension should be entertained. Not only is the present adult male population nearly three native to one foreign, but the foreign are constantly contributing to ine native. In thirty years a large part of the present adult population will have given place to their children, who will be thoroughly American. The natural increase of the 25,000,000 of adults will swell tho number of the native, while the forolgn born will be increased only by arrivals. There are three states in the Union In which the adult foreign element is larger than the native.

These are Wisconsin, Minnesota and Nebraska. In California the native element exceeds the foreign, if we confine the comparison to whites, but the Chinese throw tho weight of mini hers to the other side. There is little natural increase among the Chinese. In the Southern States, where there are comparatively few foreign citizens, tho comparison Is made between white and colored. In two States South Carolina and Mississippi tho colored predominate.

In Louisiana the difference Is less than a thousand aud in favor of tho whites. The States which have the smallest promrtionate element of colored population are Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. There are but about colored persons In these three States. If there are any timid souls who apprehend the ruin of the nation through tho influence of its foreign born population, a candid study of census figures is recommended as the best remedy for the delusion.
