BEST COPY AVAILABLE The Province Monday, September 19, 1988 43 Stalk By ART PERRY Art Critic Does the name Ready Kilowatt light any bulb of recognition in your mind? You might remember Ready. He was the little guy you used to see running around on your Hydro bill. A round-headed cartoon figure with a lightning-bolt body, he was the symbol of dynamic optimism during the 1950s. Well, Ready Kilowatt is back. Currently he is beaming his way into the dark cavernous space of the Contemporary Art Gallery.

The artist plugging him is Vancouver multi-media sculptor Kent Tate. The exhibition is an the light installation with two main light sources: one is Ready Kilowatt who is seen shining from a massive rock surface like some mad petroglyph etched in the stone, and the other is a luminous polar bear which glows as if it has just swallowed the northern lights. Tate's show is about power, mainly the misuse and misunderstanding of power. He calls the polar bear the Outlaw, and the animal stands by a pool of oil pierced by a spear or a lightning rod. The message here is about REVIEW guts.

It's about the power of power, no matter what the cost. Visually, the show is a sensation. In terms of bringing his complex sculptural ideas into true 3-D form, Kent Tate is a wizard. By painting the walls of the CAG black and by allowing his sculptures to be the main light source in the gallery, Tate creates a dramatic, enveloping stage for his figures. The exhibit, entitled Stalker, uses humor and talent to point a finger at concepts of environmental concern which need more light.

Kent Tate, Stalker, Contemporary Art Gallery, 555 Hamilton Street, 681-2700, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., until Sept. 24. Luminous polar bear seems imbued with northern lights. Ad Adventurous visions The Grand Master of Vancouver art, Jack Shadbolt, is again livening up the walls of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Shadbolt never lets his audience down.

His art has such a sense of passion that even the most unadventurous viewer is drawn into his energetic images. The VAG exhibit has two of his best series of drawings. In 1976 Shadbolt went to India (which he has done many times since.) The resulting large and long series of drawings is surely one of his most animated. Sexual figures entwine with the lush vegetation in a tableau of blacks and greys. The other series is of his favorite IT'S A WIN TONITE! CASINO EVERY NIGHT 6 P.M.-2 A.M.

Showing his understood and assimulated debt to Emily Carr, Shabolt's Hornby drawings have the same fire and love of landscape and love of life seen in the India drawings. As well, the VAG has assembled a number of his earlier paintings which pull his unending scope of talent before us. We can again see the ongoing strength of his commitment and his varied vision over a long career. Each new exhibit by Jack Shadbolt is more evidence of his unstoppable energy.
