"28 The Windsor Star, Monday, April 17, 1972 Ottawa Symphony draws cheers. 0 Now Appearing JOHNNY BROWN from the "Laugh-In" TV Show Enjoy our fine foods and "New Look" NO COVER CHARGE 73 UNIVERSITY Phone 253-4644 S63-3742 DOWNTOWN WINDSOR By HARRY Van VUGT A diminutive conductor brought his diminutive orchestra to Windsors Cleary Auditorium Sunday night and both got exactly what they deserved a standing ovation. The conductor was Mario Bernardi, the Canadian with the Italian name (his father was a mine blacksmith in Kirkland Lake, Ont.) and the ensemble was Ottawas 44-member National Arts Centre Orchestra which has been busier than a fox in a hen house. On Friday, the ensemble performed in Ottawa before U.S. President Richard Nixon.

On Saturday night, it gave a concert in London, Ont. And after Sunday night's Christian Culture Series concert in Windsor, it was off to Toronto to open the spring season of music at the St. Lawrence Centre today. The gruelling pace must be producing mental blisters but there was nothing, tedious about the performance of Beethovens Symphony No. Eight which all but ended the 38th season of the Christian Culture Series, even though Mozarts Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, offered as an encore, had the final The Eighth is Beethovens shortest and most Haydenesque symphony yet most conductors insist on cramming the stage full of musicians when performing it.

Sunday night, it was presented with all the excess verbiage sheared away as Bernardi and his NACO performed it the way Beethoven meant it to be performed. Bernardi is a shade on the relentless side when it comes to what he wants and some may have found his Eighth with its atomic clock precision a bit on the clinical side. Personally, I appreciated its tidiness, basked in its sunshine and marvelled at its transparency. Soloists are the exception rather than the rule at the Christian Culture Series concerts so it was a definite bonus to have soloist Steven Staryk team up with the NACO for the Mozart Violin Concerto, No. Five.

Staryk, another Canadian who had to make it big abroad before being accepted at home, was born in Toronto and subsequently served as concertmaster of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London (England), the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and the Chicago Symphony Orhcestra. Staryks musicianship in the Mozart was never in doubt as he generated an opulent tone with lots of vibrate. Nevertheless, I found the reading and Bernardi abetted him in this almost too explosive. Somehow or other, the drama and intensity of the performance ruled out any suggestion of tranquillity, charm and repose. Staryks gorgeous playing was difficult to resist, mind you.

And I know I would have been on my feet cheering if hed been playing the Brahms Concerto, for instance. But for Mozart, he came on a bit strong. Bernardi also directed the orchestra in three other works, the Fantasia Con-certante on a Theme of Corelli by Michael Tippett, the Improvvisazioni Concertanti No. Two by Canadian Norma Beecroft and the Overture to Tan-credi by Rossini. Ive heard Norma Beecrofts work three times now and Im still trying to figure out its aimless wanderings.

Im starting to suspect it isnt even worth the effort. On the other hand, the Tippett, which was commissioned by the 1953 Edinburgh Festival, has some glorious moments and these were enhanced by the electrical attacks of the NACO strings Sunday night. 5th BRILLIANT WEEK! In polite society the flights of fancy piloted by these stuntmen would be called lies. In show business theyre respected as sharp promotion.

Given such a dead-weight vehicle as Swedish Fly Girls, the promoters had to generate immense hot air to creat any box office lift. Here are some of the fibs the producers (and NOT, it should be emphasized, the Capitol) are taking off with: The film was made in Copenhagen and contains not a We Are Open Every Day COMPLETE LIVE STRIP TEASE "Guilty or Not Guilty Week" Come Judge For Yourself Mon. However badly presented, Swedish Fly Girls does not defy rational evaluation, even though, like Playboy, the nudes are still the vital selling point. Birte Tove could be a Bunny-independent, sexually aggressive, willing to take a man to bed just for pleasure but still searching for Mr.

Right to come along with meaning relationship. Produce r-director Jack O'Connell has painfully scrubbed the sex with oodles of dewey landscapes, soft-' focus photography, and cute kids. Very healthy and Scan dinavian. Tove loves to romp in the woods nude, and so-apparently, does the rest of Denmark. Very natural, if very susceptible to goose-bumps.

The soap-opera plot pits Tove against her former lover and father of her child. Shes left him; he is jealous and tyrannical, especially when she finds a man to marry. Russ Meyer, the sexploitation ace, would have given this plot more kinks than a New York transvestite convention. OConnell, at least, has kept everything within reasonable reach of naturalness. And for once the color photography is very sharp, and all the bodies are very nice, and there are even a few touches of imagination, all stolen from other (and better) sources.

That old rock and roller Manfred Mann has produced the music, by the way. It is banal beyond belief. Swedish Fly Girls has guaranteed itself a spot on the worst-of-the-year list. But it js a relief to report its nowhere near as bad as its advertising. single solidary reference to Sweden.

But theres not a very high lear content in Danish Fly Girls, is there? Only one girl, flaxenhaired and innocent Birte Tove, is the subject of the films doting attention. Even though shes a hostess on a luxury airliner it supplies pot and vibrator belts instead of in-flight movies her only airborne activities are picking up handsome male passengers. When her feet are on the ground, or in bed, the movie makes no attempt to suggest that shes a typical stewardess or that her job has anything to do with her earthbound pursuits. What these stewardesses do should not be censured, the ads declare righteously. Yet I havent heard any hint of either official censorship or moral censure.

Aside from the squalid promotional campaign, Swedish Fly Girls is on a different flight plan than The Stewardesses, that appalling movie that earned the Capitol big money last year. At least Fly Girls has a discernable plot and technical competence. Sex movies are making progress progress. Not only does sex no longer have to be a dirty little secret, even the movies whose principle attraction is the display of sex are becoming less ugly and degrading. Playboy magazine followed the same route, so that now it has its intellectual credentials (and its credit rating) polished.

A sage once remarked that Playboy gets all the best authors, though it gets their worst works. He sees the short items as being of almost interchangeable academic dance content and unswerving solemnity and obscurity. LONDON (CP) The Toronto Dance Theatre, which wound up its six-day London debut during the weekend, would be welcomed on a return visit to Britain, judging from the verdict of two leading ballet critica here. Richard Buckle of the Sunday Times, doyen of British ballet experts, says the groups 16 dancers strike out courageously in several directions in their experiments with dance forms based on Martha Graham techniques. Some of their earnest endeavors turn inevitably to hot air then one is reminded by a sudden gesture from Patricia Beatty, by the way Peter Randazzo catches a girl on his shoulder, above all by the 0 a 0 0 0 0 0 ELECTRONIC TONIGHT TIVOLI THEATRE 1900 MUST GO!
