By TOM HARRISON Music Critic the words of that ol' surfing duo, Bruce and Terry, Summer Means Peter SSSSSjhSlS Case and mWfMm his band lfiMtiihh V-7 jMll are at the Town Pump tSlS- tp? tonight. fcfe feis, A i its' Theatre, which now is a nicely smoothed expanse of gravel on the Expo site, will be felt but the Queen Elizabeth Theatre is taking up some of the slack with Three Dog Night on July 28 and Jerry Lee Lewis on July 30. This month we have the du Mauner International Jazz Festival and next the 12th annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival at Jericho Beach Park, July 14-16. For an alternative to the latter, No Fun is staging its satirical Rich Folk's Festival on July 9 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. The Commodore will host concerts by the Scramblers (July 7), Brighton Rock of Freedom (22), Shuffle Demons (29) and 10,000 Maniacs (Aug.

8). The Commodore also presents The Province's 13th New Alternatives concert Wednesday, with Big See, Green House and Boogie-men. The Town Pump will be busy, as usual, with The Men They Couldn't Hang (July 8), The Looters (10), Xymox (17), Stan Ridgeway (18), Clemons and Nils Lofgren. Otherwise, Perryscope Productions, the company which has booked the Coliseum for the PNE, is stubbornly quiet and temptingly evasive. The fairground's Aqua Stage is going to be full, although the roster also is being kept a secret.

There are as many as two concerts a day booked for the 17-day run, with the musical fare embracing A-fro-beat, zydeco, blues, rap, country, rock and pop. The bandstand, too, will have a steady stream of Canadian country artists. Among the names that Perry-scope's Mark Norman would drop (but not in relation to the PNE) were Jethro Tull, Fine Young Cannibals, REM, Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, Joe Cocker, Eurythmics and Simple Minds. Whether these acts will make it here before autumn is debatable, but it's certain that Elton John, who is touring this year, won't be coming to Vancouver while the Rolling Stones, who likely will be, won't be seen till late October. Paul McCartney, the other Beatle on the road, isn't due till spring.

Despite all the uncertainty, there is no shortage of music. The absence of the Expo Z1 la. Fun, but for concert promoters, summer means money. Summer is the time of large outdoor concerts, major-league acts on the stump to promote their albums, and heavy-metal extravaganzas such as last June's Monsters of Rock show headlined by Van Halen. But not this June.

Or July. The biggest concert of the coming month is Rod Stewart's B.C. Place date, July 16, with Tom Cochrane and Red Rider plus the Jeff Healey Band. The biggest event of the season unquestionably is The Who's double date there, Aug. 18-19.

Otherwise there are no big names in view, until Tuesday. Tuesday is when the Pacific National Exhibition will announce its talent lineup for the 75th annual fair, which runs Aug. 19 to Sept. 4. One act you likely can count on to be on the PNE list is Ringo Starr and his old boy's league of Billy Preston, Dr.

John, Joe Walsh, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Clarence Mil V. 1 jaTrtirif.wf look more like a rock club and less like a toy store and is presenting Danny Mack's Hydro Electric Streetcar (June 22) The Ramones (28), Northern Pikes (29), The Pandoras (30) and Alannah Myles (July 7-8). Club Soda brings Great White to Vancouver on June 26. Junior Gone Wild (19-20), Tupelo Chain Sex (26-27) and Razorbacks (28-29) The great Peter Case and his band are there tonight. 86 Street has renovated itself to Sweet.
