It is 30 years ago today that he first worked the dawn patrol on CFUN. The McFarlane resume is alphabet soup CKY and CBC radio in Winnipeg, Victoria's CJVI, long-gone CKMO'in Vancouver, then CKNW and 'LG. There was a mercifully-short gig on BCTV and a whirl on NBC radio in Honolulu.

His longest run was 20 years as CJOR's morning man. Shortly after falling out of favor there, he signed on at C1SL with this opener: "Good morning. I feel like Zsa Zsa Gabor's fifth husband. I know what I'm supposed to do. But how do I make it interesting?" The best of the McFarlane humor is self-effacing.

Such as his quip at a celebrity roast: "What a head table! I'm the only guy I've never heard of." No matter what your music druthers, Monty's grumpy charm is worth a listen if only to get away from the have-a-nice-day stuff, CJOR's heavy overdose of talk and news or the CBC's Mother Hen radio that warns us over and over again to drive carefully on rainy days. On CJVB the new fare will be nicely-measured doses of news, weather and sports and those class acts presented by the classiest of Vancouver's morning radio hosts. Read Bruce McLean every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It's enough to make your brain hurt. The Fox Rocks on morning radio and tries to shock by saying that some guy with hiccups will read the news.

Another sore point about CFOX is the hoy baby, baby music with drum machines that rattle your breakfast dishes. Elsewhere on the dial, there are Valium sounds that make you think you're riding in an elevator somewhere in Muzak land. Never mind that now. Music nicely in between those two extremes can be found by scouting east along the dial to CJVB Radio 1-170 where Monty McFarlane has held sway as the morning man since 15)82. Starting this morning, Monty switches to a playlist of Big Band sounds the likes of Glenn Miller, sentimental gentleman Tommy Dor-sey, Marry or the regal Duke Ellington, also such voices as Mel Torme, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme.
