Worse yet, I'm afraid I am to blame. His died two years ago, after nearly ten years of lying around in an alcoholic stupor. Because I was lonely my son and I developed a closer-than-most relationship. I worked hard at trying to be both father and mother. The questions: What do I do now? Butt out of his life as completely as possible and pray he can work out his own salvation? Would it help him to understand that I damaged him or would it hurt him even more? Should I shut my eyes and hope I am wrong? Sign me Too Late Dear Mother I'm trying to read between the lines and getting nowhere.

Do you suspect your son is a homosexual or is he just mother-hung? If it's the first, he that turn before he was five years of age. (That's when gender-identity is usually established.) Therapjr rarely changes people. If he's too much of a mama's boy don't apologize. Remember Henry Ford's motto "Never complain, never explain." Do your best to cut the umbilical cord and stop feeling guilty. It won't help him and it certanly won't do anything for you.

Dear Ann Landers: We are two senior citizens who live in the same apartment building. We have become very good friends but have no intention of getting married. I do a lot for him like shopping and driving him where he wants to go. Sometimes I. do his laundry.

He enjoys playing cards and so do I. When I make a mistake he cusses me and calls me a dumbbell. Otherwise, he is kind and considerate. He says he loves me and I believe him. In spite of his few faults I like the old fool.

Once in a while he treats me to a restaurant dinner or an ice cream cone when we go for a walk. But something is bothering me. When his relatives come to 'visit and they all go to a restaurant for dinner he never invites me along. Yes, they know we are close friends. Am I crazy to stick with him? Augusta, Ga.

Dear It sounds as if you're doing a lot more for your friend than he's doing for you. Have a frank talk and spell it out. In the meantime, if you have an opportunity to take a walk and get an ice cream cone with another gentleman do it. Jonathan Berry By A. Leokum Machiavelli was a brilliant Italian statesman, writer, and politician, who lived from 1496 to 1527.

At the age of 29, Machiavelli was already secretary of foreign affairs for the republic of Florence. He went on diplomatic missions to the different states into which Italy was divided at that time, as well as to Germany and Prance. In 1502 he met Cesare Bdrgia, who had a reputation for cruelty and violence. But in Machiavel-li's'mind, Borgia became a kind of ideal politician. As a result of these experiences Machiavellic formed political theories which he put into a farrtous book.

This book was "II Principe" (The Prince) which he finished in 1513. It was the first book that dealt with politics as a practical science'. It was written as advice in the hope that some ruler would unite all of Italy. The political methods that Machiavelli recommended were not always honest. For this reason the word Machiavellian came to mean a clever, dishonest politician, or a political act which was done without regard for the ethics of behavior.

In 1512 the powerful Me-dicis became rulers of -Florence once again. They removed Machiavelli from office, had him imprisoned and tortured, and finally exiled from Florence. ARCHIE chess exf4 Rxf4 16. Bf3 RdfS 17. Be4 Nd4 18.

WHAT PART OF THE If WASHU6TOV, P.C.f) COUNTRY HAS THE MOST Vi, In a few weeks the Candidates match between Boris Spassky, and Viktor Korchnoi will begin. The winner earns the right to challenge Anatoly Karpov for the world championship. This week we take a look at Viktor Korchnoi. You have probably noticed that the three finalists all have Russian names. Only two in fact, Soviet citizens.

Korchnoi plays under the Dutch flag. About a year and a half ago, Korchnoi, during a tournament in Amsterdam, applied to the Dutch governmennt for political assylum. He said he was under pressure from the Soviet authorities due, in the main, to his outspokenness. Three years ago Korchnoi was also a finalist in the Candidates matches; then his opponent was Karpov. Korchnoi felt that he was under some pressure not to win the match.

His most telling comment was, "I felt that if I won the match, some accident might befall me, like Jean Flint bridge Teams from Argentina, Australia, Taiwan, Sweden, North America and the defending champions, also from North America, won the right to play in the Bermuda Bowl, held this year in Manila. It ended, Oct.29, and was a genuine thriller, even though the inevitable at last happened and the two ACBL teams got to the finals. The defending champions went into the finals with the advantage of a 30 IMP carry over from the qualifying rounds, against the North American challengers. After 64 boards in the final, the score was 17914 to 136 in favor of the defenders. They had led the field for six whole days and were the favorites to regain the crown with only 32 more boards to play on the final day.

However on the last day the challengers found their best form and surged ahead winning the Bermuda Bowl by 245 IMPs to 214 Bridge Calendar: Nov. 29 split local, Carling-wood; Dec. 1 novice game, Club results CARLINOWOOO Mm. Is Section NS t. R.

Afterward Korchnoi said that Karpov was not as strong as most people said. His next internationnal appearance was a full two years later, when he defected.
