Illustration of the constant change that goes on in any film is furnished by his view of Caroline and her two lovers and the Caroline on the screen. He saw them as young, maybe 20 years old. In the film, because of casting and the personality of actors, Caroline is a more mature woman, perhaps in her late 20s.

He will possibly see more subtle changes by director Ron Kelly. To Kelly, modern uninvolvement or alienation is important in the film. "Female emancipation, the feminine mystique call it what you will at this time, and especially on this continent, seems to call for a feminine aggressiveness that is in conflict with woman's natural capacity for submis-siveness, for love," he explained. "In the film Caroline begins as a charming young lady, but she is revealed as an emotional failure The men represent different worlds, between which she thinks she can choose, but she hasn't really a total emotional involvement with either." And Robertson's concept is similar. "Caroline is unable to make one single satisfying commitment to human encounter." The two men are portrayed by Vancouver actor Robert Howay, who plays Caroline's hometown Vancouver sweetheart, and Francois Tasse, who plays her French-Canadian lover.

The two cities, Vancouver SOUND. By JAMES In a description of his new feature-length film Waiting for Caroline, director Ron Kelly mentions female emancipation, or the feminine mystique as part of the mystery of Caroline. With Montreal born Alexandra Stewart In the title role of Caroline, the film will be seen Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. on the CBC Festival television series. Subsequent distribution is planned in Canadian and foreign movie houses.

George C. Robertson, a Vancouver writer, was the author of Caroline before necessary changes were made in transferring the written word Into this National Film Board-CBC film. He has no idea of the final intricacies of Caroline's character, and as for women generally, or their mystique particularly, he feels that the fewer things said about women the better. He wrote a love story about Caroline and two men, one French-Canadian, the other from Vancouver, and doesn't feel up to describing the wo-Vnan now that he has created her. Although there are scenes in Vancouver and Quebec City, the film does not concern separatism.

And according to Robertson, the only thing Canadian about it is that it was made here. Robertson returned to Vancouver two weeks ago from Peru, where he directed a short CBC film "Barriada" about the work of Canadian Oblate Fathers in the slums of South America. "Certain places have the quality of the unknown. For Vancouver, Quebec is foreign, and vice-versa." The three leading characters, Caroline, Marc and Stephen, are first seen in Quebec City.

In Vancouver, Caroline's father is planning marriage, and she goes to see him. Marc and Stephen follow. The film is classified as experimental by Robertson, as was the earlier CBC-NFB production The Ernie Game. Critics generally were enthusiastic about Ernie, and the magazine Variety went so far as to say that it is the "best Canadian feature film made to date."
