Each won the right to advance to the quarter-finals in the International Chess Federation's inter-zonal tournament at Palma, Majorca, last December. Fischer finished first and Taimanov fifth in that competition. The secretary of the Canadian Chess Federation, George Bryant of Vancouver, says the best-of-10-games match at UBC will probably last three to four weeks. The study, conducted at Penn State University's transportation and traffic safety centre and processed on an IBM computer, tested the driver reaction time of volun- teers during a two-year program financed jointly by the university and the state's transporation and traffic safety centre.

"The results," according to Penn State's Dr. Richard Olsen, "do not agree with popularly held opinions about the effects of prolonged periods behind the wheel." There was no appreciable reduction in a subject's physical ability to respond to external factors after being behind the wheel continuously for up to nine hours. The reaction time throughout individual testing periods remained virtually unchanged. However, pe- riodically, subjects simply failed to respond entirely to changing road conditions. We concluded that the monotony of driving for a long period of time sometimes lulls people into something similar to a momenetary hypnotic trance, Had this been a real situation, a driver might not have responded to an stopping in front of him, and an acci-' dent would have occurred." Dr.

Olsen concluded, "Although the results revealed unsus- 'l pected information on the side effects of driver fatigue, they did not dispel the potential hazards of driving without breaks or periods of rest." Grandmaster Nicholas Rossolimo of Greenwich Village, a former champion of France, is representing that country in the 12-man all Grandmasters Tournament at Monte Carlo. In the second round, he scored an original and sensational upset; his victim was David Bronstein of the Soviet Union, a fearsome opponent who once played a tie match for the world championship with the former titleholder, Mikhail Botvin-nik. Rossolimo's performance as White in a Caro-Kann Defence was replete with surprises sharp and compelling.

His 8 QxNP seemed risky, not because White deferred the recovery of a piece, but mainly because he failed to heed that old warning: "He who grabs the queen knight pawn sleeps in the street." The next few moves were routine. Then 10 NxP seemed to give Black the better game. White refuted this idea with 11 B-K3. Here the move 11 NxPch could have been followed by 12 K-K2, N-K4; 13 B-N5ch, N-B3; 14 BxP, giving White the better game. R. D. Keene of Cambridge defeated J. Smejkal of Czechoslovakia. Kecne, as White, appropriately adopted the English Opening.

This served him in good stead because Smejkal either blundered outright or made a fingerfehler with 12 Until that point, Black's play had implied an opportune P-QN4. Even so, White could have had a bit of an edge by 13 PxP, RxP; 14 Q-R4. Black's opening play, based on 10 R-Nl, was probably faulty. In the mid-game Black's queen knight pawn was a permanent weakness and it was just a matter of time until White found a way to snag the weakling without allowing any good counter. In the finale, Black was plagued by time trouble.

White nonetheless, remained cautious. Note 35 P-K5; had White played 35 RxN, Black could have stirred up trouble with 35 SPRING SPECIAL HIGH SPEED WHEEL BALANCING PER WHEEL MOST CARS Rossolimo's 14 BxNch was keen move. He had to take this knight before it could be supported by the black king knight. And It all fit in with White's objective the occupation of White's QNS by a knight. Thus, after 14 RxB, White (a pawn ahead and with two connected pawns on the queen wing), was in position to force repeated liquidations.

Rossolimo's strategy reached its apex with 36 P-N4. Black had no good counter and with 41 R-Q7 White placed the foe's king in a mating net.
