etsT corf AVAILABU A2 THE PROVINCE, Friday, June 24, 1983 People 'BN pioneer dies at 76 Di blushes over 'more children' ize thp rpnnneihllrv wp nnw hnvf tr Over-valued home spurs confusion United Press International CLEVELAND Someone in the county auditor's office listed the worth of the home owned by Joseph and Elizabeth Sprenger at $510 million and plunged the city's budget into confusion. The house was worth only $35,500. As a result, Cleveland will get $2 million less in real estate revenues than expected and the city's schools will get $4 million less. Their budgets were based on anticipated revenues that included the auditor's error. "It throws our whole budget out of whack," said Joseph Tegreene, a member of the school board.

Cuyahoga county auditor Tim McCormack said he was not in office when the error occurred. He speculated that someone at a computer console mistakenly placed the '5100' code number used to indicate residential homes at the front of the value for the Sprengers' home. The value came out $510,035,000. Charles Edwards, one of the most influential figures in broadcast journalism in Canada, died in Delta Thursday of a stroke. He was 76.

Edwards retired as general manager of Broadcast News Ltd. in 1971 after holding the top management post of the Canadian Press broadcast affiliate since its inception in 1954. A jovial, popular newsman, Ed- wards also set up the first French-language wire service for broadcasters in North America and oversaw the development of BN's national audio service. Press News was the forerunner of Broadcast News, serving as the broadcast arm of CP, the national newsgathering co-operative. Press News was started in 1941 and Edwards became its manager in early 1944.

He was born in Winnipeg and brought up in the Saskatchewan cities of Moose Jaw and Regina. After a year of college, he started his news career in 1928 as sports writer with the Win-J nipeg Free Press. He held a variety of jobs unrelated to journalism during the early years of the Depression and, Edwards, or Uncle Charlie as he was known to most broadcasters who knew him, was instrumental in the founding of the Radio Television News Directors Association of Canada. The RTNDA's prestigious Charlie Award for spot news reporting is named after him. Former colleagues remember Edwards fondly.

Typical of tributes was that of Bob Trimbee, BN's current general manager, who said: "Most of all, I and many others remember Charlie as someone who cared, someone who took the time to listen and who worried about the troubles of the newest rookie reporter to the most seasoned veteran. And we loved Uncle Charlie for It. "His name stands in the Canadian Newspaper Hall of Fame and on an annua) award given Canadian broadcasters for excellence in spot news reporting. He was proud of those associations. But he often said he was happiest just to have had the opportunity to work in journalism and to make so many friends.

Charlie would say: 'What a crazy way to make a living. But, boy, it is Canadian Press ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. Prince Charles sent a flutter through a crowd gathered at a youth festival and put a blush on the cheeks of his wife Thursday when he said he wants them to have several more children in future years. Charles, accompanied by his wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, officially opened a provincial Festival of Youth, and delighted the enthusiastic but respectful crowd who put on a show of traditional Newfoundland music, dancing and gymnastics.

Diana stole the show, the crowd of 5,000 erupting into squeals when she stepped from a limousine at King George park on the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake. Charles addressed the crowd on the virtues and responsibilities of being young and said he was more aware of them now that he has become a parent. Departing from his text, he said "we do, as parents, real wards one child at present and I hope several more in the future." At that comment, the crowd let go with a cheer and clapped and Diana, 21, blushed and looked downward. In other royal news, Buckingham Palace issued a statement Thursday saying Prince Edward, youngest son of the Queen, will join the Royal Ma- rine commandos as a probationary 2nd Lieutenant before he goes to Cambridge University in October. Joining the marines, heroes of last year's conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, will involve a tough ordeal for Edward, 19.

He will have to pass stamina tests before he can qualify for the coveted green beret of the marines. The tests will in: elude swinging his way through a no- torious "Tarzan course" in full battle gear, marching over rugged terrain in bad weather and polishing his own boots. CHARLES EDWARDS in 1933, was offered a six-week job with CP to cover curling. But he stayed with the co-operative and was transferred to Vancouver, where in 1933 he married the former Marjoree Ash. They had two sons Bruce, an engineer, and Alyn, a reporter with BCTV.
