K-BS resigns ill' "Hi. -IL. Tu rrnii "r.ri 9 SfcT By PAUL RAUGUST Unrelenting determination and an abundance of talent has given Bobby Fischer of the United States a lead in the world chess title elimination match being played at the University of B.C. Soviet Union's Mark Taimanov conceded games two and three Friday afternoon, placing Fischer within points of winning the match. Playing for the third day in a game that started Tuesday, the Soviet grandmaster failed to halt Fischer's determined attack.

Fischer, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, had been criticized at the conclusion of the second day of play for refusing to offer a draw to the Russian, a concession the youthful American seldom makes. Experts saw the game as a forced draw after Fischer lost the initiative of white in the Sicilian Defence. Taimanov's resignation came on the 88th move. Their seventh game is to be played at Seville, Spain, Sunday. At Las Palmas, Canary Island, Bent Larsen of Denmark and Wolfgang Uhl-mtnn of West Germany drew in then-fifth game. They also will play again Sunday.

Larsen has won two games and Uhl-mann one with two draws. Winner of their match advances against the winner of the Fischer-Taimanov match. The competition is being held to decide who meets world champion Boris Spassky for the title in Moscow next year. Canadian Press BRAMPTON History was recreated and made simultaneously in this sleepy Ontario town with the bombing of an abandoned brickworks. The history being recreated was of First World War days in France; that being made was the startof the most ambitious television drama scries ever undertaken.

The bombing of the abandoned Cheltenham Brickworks by a biplane bearing German insignia marked an early stage in filming of the pilot episode of the CBC's Whi-tcoaks of Jalna series scheduled for telecasting next year. The biplane, hand-built over a three-year period by test pilot George Neil, who flew it and personally tossed out three bombs, carried out its mission over what looked remarkably like a section of a war-ravaged French village. Minor exterior alterations converted the yard's main building into a striking recreation of a war-damaged inn, while the brickyard's own rail siding became the village train station where Canadian troops disembark for their first taste of battle. The battle scenes, involving more than 100 performers and technicians, will constitute about 10 minutes of the hour long pilot. The series is planned to be at least 13 episodes long and features what the CBC calls a "parallel time element" whereby each episode will chronicle, simultaneously, the adventures of succeeding generations of Whiteoaks.

So Paul Harding, who plays Renny Whiteoak, appears both as a young First World War officer and an 80-year-old patriarch in the same instalment. Kate Reid, the series' other principal star, portrays both the Whiteoak matriarch, Adeline, and her own great-granddaughter, also named Adeline, in other episodes. Bright, colorful, theatrically ingenious? A little heavy? Where to start writing about a high school theatre piece, in a gymnasium, without being patronizing or condescending, and without suggesting that the next stop for the production is Broadway, translation into 19 languages and a Canada Council sponsored tour of Russia for our new found friends? Electrogenesis, a West Vancouver High School production, written, produced, directed and staged by a group of Grade Nine students, is the best evening I have spent in a high school gymnasium, and a lot more rewarding than most evenings I have spent in amateur theatres. Obviously very little money, equally obviously a great deal of enthusiasm, but above everything else a serious dedication to the production. That's what they have on their makeshift stage, up in one corner of the gym, with hardly any lighting to speak of, and a bright painted paper backdrop. Off stage, in the corridors, they are the usual bunch of uncoordinated, incoherent kids, almost embarrassed with one another. Doing it they are powerful enough to communicate with their peers and make their parents the embarrassed ones.

Book review busting out this June Canadian Press TORONTO A national book review designed to publicize Canadian books and strengthen the publishing industry will be distributed free to libraries and booksellers across Canada in June. Val Clery, Toronto freelance writer who heads the project, said it will be an attempt to overcome the domination of book promotion by foreign-owned magazines. Clery said he hopes to devote more than 95 per cent of the editorial space to Canadian books, with reviews of several books with a common theme In the same issue. Drama has a bad time in most high schools.

Not too many students get past the very conservative choices of their teachers. Electrogenesis is the groups' own, home grown, special blend of grass roots theatre, no stems, no seeds, very pleasant, very mild. It is what is bugging any thinking kid, the irreconcila-bles of ecology and technology, the dialogue between God and his child prodigy, the confusion of prophets and profits. It is objective. Not once does a character fall back on the old hackneyed lines of "my parents don't understand me" or "the generation gap is where it's at.

man." The production is concerned, all the way from Genesis to 1984, with some real problems. And they do it very well, with dance, with some mime, with a fresh, youthful sense of satire, and a really admirable sense of restraint. Electrogenesis runs again this evening at 8 p.m. It is part of the school's Drama Festival. Also on Saturday at 12:30 there will be a sensitivity workshop for theatre, and next Wednesday and Thursday an evening of one act plays.

Watch Gwynyth Walsh. With half a chance, and not too many good reviews to spoil her, this is a girl who could, one day, be very well known in the theatre. She is quite remarkable, a natural actress who moves and understands every minute she is on stage.
