only 1980 at the age of 58. Fielding was best known for his work for director Sam Peckin-pah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, Junior Bonner, Bring Me the Head ot Alfredo Garcia and The Killer Elite) and Clint Eastwood (The Enforcer, The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Gauntlet). Despite these plusses, thriller buffs are in for a disappointment. Burdened with a bland, obvious script and unwilling to indulge itself in truly explicit violence, Funeral Home is neither mysterious nor particularly shocking. It ends up being a mild-mannered Psycho clone.

Consider, for a moment, Funer-al Home, a 1980 thriller released briefly in Eastern Canada as Cries in the Night. William Fruet, who produced and directed it, is remembered as the writer-director of Wedding in White. An evocative tale of personal tragedy on the Second World War home front, Fruet's debut feature was the Canadian Film Awards best picture prize-winner for 1972 and contained within it the promise of even greater things to come. Unfortunately, the Lethbridge-born filmmaker has made only three features since, all of them stalking-killer shockers. Death Weekend, released in 1975, starred Brenda Vaccaro as a lady in distress In rural Ontario.

Endangered here is holidaying Heather Chambers (Lesleh Donaldson), the 17-year-old granddaughter of boarding house landlady Maude Chambers (Kay Haw-trey). Grandfather Chambers, who used to be the local mortician, disappeared some years ago, so the family manse is no longer used as a Funeral Home. This is the kind of film in which everyone lurks. There's an idiot handyman (Vancouver actor Stephen Miller) who lurks and drools, a longtime border (Barry Morse) who lurks and smiles, and an unfriendly cat who lurks and leaps. The bestlurker is, of course, cinematogra-pher Mark Irwin's camera.

It just loves to prowl about the spooky old house at night, offer a mouse-eye-level point-of-view shots. Lurking and limping is The Killer, who may turn out to be one of, all of, or none of the above. One of the picture's strong points is Donaldson's performance. A 1982 Genie Awards best actress nominee, her Heather is a spunky screamer in the best Jamie Lee Curtis tradition of teenaged terror. Like the late Fassbinder, who wanted to make a movie here, Altman is a big fan of Montreal, a result of his experience shooting the movie Quintet here several years ago. The Montreal festival also had his movie Health in its world premiere. Starring Sandy Dennis, Cher and Karen Black, the same actresses who appeared in the stage play, Come Back to the Five and Dime is a tender, funny and surprising trip down nostalgia lane Texas-style.

Written by Ed Graczyk, the play is overlaid with the richness and irony one associates with Tennessee Williams' work. It recounts a worshipful James Dean fan club of four girls and one boy in the 1950s in a dot of a Texas town called McCarthy. Twenty years later, a club reunion is held and that's when shocking revelations start rolling like tumble-weed. All the action takes place at the tacky five-and-dime lunch counter, so the movie does suffer from a claustrophobic constraint, in the first part at least. But the claustrophobia explodes for good when a gorgeous, elegantly dressed mystery woman drives up in a yellow Porsche.

Joanne knows all about the club's past doings, but no one can place her. It turns out that Joanne, played by Karen Black, is former club member Joseph Qualley, driven out of the town as a youth because he hung out with the girls and occasionally liked to dress up in girl's clothes. I Tl1VJBaMaJ Canadian Press MONTREAL Feisty Serge Losique, the founding director and real star of Montreal's World Film Festival, has been known to call the modestly named affair the Cannes of North America. Unfortunately, one doesn't exit from the World Film Festival to behold a sun-kissed Mediterranean or to inhale the tantalizing Provencale cuisine offered at the string of smart cafes lining the Croisette in Cannes. Here, one leaves the enormous five-theatre Cinema Parisien to behold a somewhat grotty commercial section of downtown St. Catherine Street where it is impossible to find a good cup of coffee, let alone those traditional libations of festival freaks the espresso or cappuccino coffee. So that leaves the movies.

The selection in the festival's sixth year is genuinely strong enough and exciting enough to warrant the Cannes of North America claim. Midway through the festival, attendance was up 20-25 per cent over last year and attendance could easily hit 150,000 compared with last year's record of 130,000. As for firsts, the Montreal festival has scooped Toronto's Festival of Festivals in September with the world premiere of the late Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Veronica Voss, as well as the Venice festival with a screening of Fassbinder's QuereUe, completed shortly before the young German director's death in June. No one knows quite how Losique has pulled it off, though it's a safe bet that he began mastering the art of cajolery in his baby crib. Robert Altman's Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, a film adap- Superman star allowed no fun Canadian Press CALGARY The Man of Steel is treated like fragile glass when it comes to his off-camera hours.

Christopher Reeve, the star of Superman III during current filming in Alberta, is expected to leap tall buildings in a single bound in front of the cameras. But when the 12-hour shooting days are over, Reeve must transform himself into even more of a wimp than Superman's alter-ego, mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. "The insurance regulations for a big-budget film are a real drag," said Reeve, 29, during an interview at his hotel room in downtown Calgary. "You can figure if it's fun, you probably won't be allowed to do it." Reeve was thrilled to receive an invitation to go hot-air ballooning on one of his days off from the $40-million Superman sequel. But he quickly learned off-camera flying was out of the question.

"You can't do anything except walk and even that they don't like," he complained good-humoredly. "If they could they'd nail my feet to the floor." In place of ballooning Reeve arranged a scenic trip to Lake Louise, about 200 kilometres west of Calgary inside Banff National Park. But even that Clark Kent-like excursion had its restrictions because "somebody had to drive me up there." Somehow, Reeve said, if he had been at the wheel for the two-hour car trip it would have violated a section of his insurance contract which states he is "not allowed to pursue any hazardous occupation." He observed, with an exasperated smile, that even "walking across the street can be a hazardous occupation." Film crews for Superman III, which also stars comedian Richard Pry or, are in and around Calgary for another month of production work in anticipation of a December completion date. Calgary represents the comic-book city Metropolis while High River, the home of federal Progressive Conservative leader Joe Clark, is being transformed into Superman's fabled boyhood home, Smallville, U.S.A. No matter which location, most of the Man of Steel's building leaping is either done by stunt-men substituting for Reeve or by tricky film techniques that leave the star in no danger.
