Helping hand What Rufus Gibbs has done with $60,000 Patients with arthritis who are undergoing rehabilitation treatment in Vancouver have the opportunity of using facilities unique in this part of Canada thanks to the generosity of a local philanthropist. The Rufus Gibbs Lodge a right, contemporary-styled single storey building on the corner of Ash and West 16th Avenue is a boarding home for out patients, where they receive "protective care" while being treated at the CARS medical centre. "We have all types of patients from those with rheumatoid arthritis to the osteos, who are in the 50 or so age group," explained Mrs. M. M.

McFarlane, chairman of the Rufus Gibbs Lodge committee. "But the ones we specialize in really are the younger ones. Those that would be of value to the community are being rehabilitated." The building program was financed by the $60,000 donation of Mr. Rufus Gibbs, and an additional loan of $17,000 from the B.C. division of CARS the Canadian By MAGGIE WILKINSON Arthritis and Rheumatism Society.

And this month the final instalment of the loan was repaid on behalf of women's auxiliaries to CARS branches throughout the province. Locally, the women's auxiliary has raised some $8,000 since the lodge was opened just over two years ago, and there have been substantial donations from auxiliaries in B.C. The WA in Prince George sent $500 as its contribution. Furnishings were also provided by the WA from an existing fund and given by other donors, and the landscaping around the building was the contribution of the Garden Club of Vancouver. There is accommodation at the for 12, patients four double bedrooms and four singles--a dining room, spacious lounge equipped with television, and specially designed bathrooms including one with a shower that can accommodate a wheel chair.

to and from the medical said Mrs. McFarlane. "Patients have to go to the centre twice a day and really work at it." The majority of patients spends an average of ten weeks at the lodge, though some have stayed up to year. "Some of the cures are really quite fantastic," continued Mrs. McFarlane.

"A few months ago a Sechelt woman came here in a wheel chair unable to use her hands, and she walked out without even a stick. "She was going to be able to return to her home and function as a reasonably efficent housewife." Under the auspices of CARS no patient with arthritis, whose doctor prescribes a course of treatment, can be refused that treatment because of an inability to pay. There is great. need for facilities for arthritics, such as Rufus Gibbs Lodge, SO much so that Mrs. McFarlane stressed that the next project for consideration would be the enlargement of the building.

"We are hoping to build an extension for eight patients because this new hospital bylaw will provide adequate facilities to enable us to process more patients. Of course, we are all terribly thrilled about the lodge," concluded Mrs. McFarlane. "It is wonderful, but we could not have done it without Rufus Gibbs."
