THE 1K0VINCE, Saturday, October U7I Worthy Trovatore pleases full house 4 1M 41 0 0 By LAWRENCE CLUDEMY The Vancouver Open Aiiociitlon opened in 7113 aeison Thursday night in (he Queen EllMh Theatre with Verdl'i 11 Trovatore to gilt-packed house. It was very good presentation, Philip Silver's sets end lighting were suit, bly sombre and conjured up an effective vision of medieval Spain, while the costumes by Suianne Met were In rich but dusty colors. Within this affecting framework Irving Guttmsn created a simple straightforward staging which alao underlined the mublcal values of the work. On the vocal side honors wera about even. Pauline Tinsley'i command of the stage wit ai complete ai ever and her Leonora a well conceived and secure characterisation.

Vocally she was in good form, floating her high notes with effortless ease and almost bringing down the house with O'amor suU'all rosea. No less of a success was Gabrielle La-vlgne, making her Vancouver debut in the part of Aiucena. Blessed with a firm lower voice register and truthful tones at the top, Lavigne managed to produce a pretty nice flow of tone even when being buffetted by Count de Luna's soldiers. In all, she showed herself to be resoundingly committed to the emotional demands of her taxing role and only needs to add depth to her Turning to the men: Michael Davidson's portrayal of the Count was imposingly sung and acted. Ha was more than Ju.t a villain, bt was thwarted lover who heightened the drama at almost every point, Francisco Laiaro's Manrico was also sung very well, tie had tha voice to make Di Quelle pira sound heroic but should It not have been followed by a grander gesture? The production gained considerably In strength through the fine casting of tha lesser roles.

Arnold Vokelaills. for ax-ample, who was Ferrando, not only aang sonorously, but also gave sterling characterisation of the old man at arms. Marcel Larochelle also wai far above ama.e a Hun, a Soulier in Mam no's service, while Sophie Turko not only sang her inode.il part very nicely, but alao looked like a charming young friend of Leonora's and not some tiresome old lady who Inexplicably follows the heroine around. As for the production from the angle of chorus and orchestral work, there wera times when tha chorus, despite its size, sounded curiouslv thin for Verdi's red-blooded music. However, this was not the case In the famous Anvil Chorus which went over big with tha audience.

In the orchestra pit, conductor George Crum appeared to gauge the overall sweep of Verdi's score very well though occasionally he did tend to overwhelm the singers. Alas, the orchestra's response was not always impeccable so that the accompaniments sometimes lacked a vital rhythiinic profile. In all, however, an enjoyable evening. A Ken Allan photu Fischer refuses draw, wins chess final opener Computerized soap opera The Lion was too jolly on a seemingly hesitant Fischer, by castling long and pressing with a rook at knight one against Fischer's pawns. But Fischer managed to curb the threats one by one and started to even chances, after castling short and consolidating his position.

At one crucial stage, between moves 26 and 29, the game was apparently veering to a draw, since Petrosian and Fischer were virtually repeating the same moves, Fischer forced to play with a rook from king one to king two and three to defend a central pawn. Petrosian offered a draw at move 28, which Fischer rejected. $2 million grant for. Sesame Street United Press International WASHINGTON A $2 million federal grant to producers of the children's educational television programs Sesame Street and The Electric Company was announced Thursday by the U.S. Office of Education.

Sesame Street, In its third season, reaches between 7 million and 8 million pre school children, The Electric Company will premier Oct. 25 over most of the 200 stations in the Public Broadcasting Service network to supplement classroom reading instruction for 7 to 10 years olds. "During its first two years on the air, Sesame Street has vividly demonstrated the effectiveness of television as a tool that can be used to reach and teach millions of youngsters," said education commissioner Sidney Marland Jr. "In my judgment, the show represents one of the best continuing investments the office of Education has ever made." Marland said the Electric Company was an experiment that would contribute to his agency's $10 million national right-to-read program. Since 1968, the Office of Education has given nearly $8 million to the Children's Television Workshop, producers of Sesame Street and The Electric Company.

Other financial supports of the programs are the Ford and Carnegie foundations and the Corporation for Public Beuter BUENOS AIRES Bobby Fischer, 28 year-old U.S. grandmaster, defeated former world champion Tigran Petros-ian Thursday night in the first game of a 12 game match to decide who will challenge Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union for the world chess title. Fischer, playing whites, displayed his usual adamant will to win, and at the 28th move refused an offer for a draw by his 42-year-old Armenian opponent, opening the way to victory with a pawn heading for coronation in the king's sector, and finally winning at the 40th move. The game was played to a full house in the San Martin Theatre. Petrosian surprised experts with an aggressive variant of the Sicilian Defence against Fischer's pawn-king-four opening.

The variant, called Pelikan, allowed Petrosian to sort out the development of his figures and, sacrificing one pawn, he took the initiative, pressing hard against Fischer's queen's pawn. Fischer's position looked increasingly restricted, while Petrosian placed a domineering queen at rook four. Tension at the theatre reached climax when, at move 13, a sudden blackout left everything in the dark for 23 minutes. N-KBJ 3. P-G4 There is this most impressive thrust stage, doing it's best to turn the Aria Club into Stratford, and the play doing it's best to do something modern and interesting for Henry II, and the cast seems to have been left to wander about between them looking for a time and a place to hang it's crowns. Jace van der Veen smouldered sufficiently as the second son, Geoffrey, but for the rest, Henry, his mistress, his wife and two other sons, plus the King of France I could see no uglies, no beauties, no desperations and no loud pleases. And it is the pleases that really mean in any examination of relationships. Please love me, please react to me, or even please just keep that nice old money coming so that I can pretend some more.

Then and now, that must be what James Goldman was trying to say. But I didn't hear it. like to feel the knives of words going in and to hear the silences beyond tears. Fur a short while 1 hoped that this was indeed wht was going to happen, and then I realized that what I was really waiting for was not another hidden blade, but the commercial. Both the play and the production have that television quality, that unreal, too clever, too slick, sophisticated snap opera that might have come out of a computer.

Feed in T. S. Eliot, and Shakespeare, Albee, Oscar Wilde, and Dorothy Parker, program the setting to a generally 12th century historical context, and The Lion In Winter could easily come out the other end. There are some beautifully vicious moments, some hilariously funny moments, and a great mine of passion in the script. But Bill Millerd's direction got very little of it off the stage.

By JAMES BARBER Henry II, King of England, jollied his way off stage at the Arts Club Theatre Thursday night, exchanging philosophical pleasantries with his wife Eleanor, looking, and sounding, like Ernest Hemingway playing Santa Claus. The Lion in Winter Is a strange play, a contemporary interpretation of 12th century history, a new look at the quality and the content of the relationships between royalty; a little hit of Incest, a smidgeon of sodomy, a lot of very elegant talk about what's going to happen to the boys and the money when Daddy dies and a lot of fancy manoeuvring around who might die first and how. Nobody does, everybody is there at the final curtain, all rather jolly as though they were ready for the next instalment of Peyton Place. I like a nice, elegant, bitchy play, I P-QB4 P-K3 PXP NQB.I P-Q3 PK4 NB3 NXP N-N5 B-KB4 While 31. P-B4 23.

Each of these multiton die-sel behemoths, called cinemo-biles, is a self-contained movie studio with highly compact cameras, lights, sound recorders, sets, kitchens and dressing rooms.

They ere replacing the old-fashioned vans used in the past for each type of equipment and thus cutting production costs. The cinemnbiles are the invention of a short, spunky Egyptian, Fou ad Said. He is the founder and developer of Cinemohiie, a Los Angeles concern that enables production companies to shoot films on location much faster1 and more economically than ever before. In the 1920s and 1030s time was not that crucial and the style was to build Central Park in Los Angeles) rather than travel the 3,000 miles. But today, with bettei transportation, rather than bringing the location to the studio, it is more economical to bring the studio to the location.

Instead of building a set for $8,000, you can rent it for $100. Said's company has bad little competition because of the jump gained on the market when he originated the idea of mobile film studios In 1966. Purchased by Taft Broadcasting Company in 1968, It handles about 90 feature and television productions a year, which is more than 60 per cent of the total film output of the country, including productions for Universal, Paramount, 20th Century-Fox and Metro-Gold wyn-Mayer.
