No, Crandall Says YORK (AP) How.do "I you bench the greatest home run hitter of all-time? don't, says Del let him do it himself.

would be a little presumptuous of me to bench Hank Aaron," the manager of the Milwaukee Brewers said Friday. "The reason we got him over here was to hit, so you've got to let him hit. he decides he's not hitting and wants out of the lineup, something else. Hank and we played together for 10 years. We communicate.

So 'there's no problem there. "But I'm not benching him unless he asks he did. We know he is going to hit. But he can't hit if he's not in the lineup." Crandall brought his Brewers to New York for a week-end local Mermen I Enter Meet The Panama City Swim Team Sailfish, of the Panama City Swim and Tennis Club, will participate at the Chandler Branch YMCA in Mobile, Ala. today.

Riot Occurs After Fight LOS ANGELES (AP) Several persons were injured when irate boxing fans, angered by a decision, set fire to seats at the Olympic Auditorium and threw rocks and bottles at firemen, authorities said. Three persons were arrested for malicious mischief and resisting arrest, a police spokesman said. The spokesman said 50 po- licemen quelled the disturbance in 15 minutes Thursday night. Cubs Topple Cardinals, 4-3 series with the Yankees.

His star attraction, the man who last year broke Babe Ruth's record of 714 career home runs, came along largely for the ride. Hank Aaron had asked to be relieved temporarily of his designated hitter duties because of an atrocious batting slump. In 11 games, he had hit one home run and batted only .114. "Hank came to me Tuesday night after Jim Palmer (Baltimore) had beaten us 1-0," Crandall explained. "He said he.

wasn't swinging right, that he didn't think he was helping the ball club and that he thought it best that he lay out a while. "I Crandall was asked if, aware of Aaron's batting problems, he had thought of taking the action on his own. "No," he replied firmly. "It's not something that I would initiate. I would leave it up to Aaron.

Now that doesn't mean I would never make a suggestion. Later in the season, if I thought Hank didn't feel well or wasn't doing well I would have no hesitancy about approaching him and talking it over with him. "The key is but the decision must be his." Crandall said he felt that pressure still bore heavily on the home run king even though the fussand furore of breaking Ruth's record had subsided. "fn this game, you move from one pressure situation to another," the Brewers' manager said. "Aaron is still under a great deal of pressure.

He's very team oriented. He knows we have a good ball club and he wants to help us. "He has great motivation. Every time he pulls on that uniform the pressure builds up. If he doesn't' produce, he is disappointed.

He feels he has let the team down." Judo Scheduled A judo tournament will be held May 3 at the Gulf Coast gym. More than 250 contestants, men, women artd children, are expected. CHICAGO (AP) Steve Swisher's run-scoring single off St. Louis relief ace Al Hrabosky in the eighth inning lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals Friday. Swisher's game-winning hit off Hrabosky, 0-3, scored rookie Peter Lacock, who had led off the eighth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Manny Trillo.

The Cardinals had jumped to a 3-0 lead off Rick Reuschel in the first inning on a double by Ted Sizemore, an infield single by Bake McBride and run-scoring singles by Reggie Smith, Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz. Chicago picked up a run in the second inning on a walk to Jerry Morales, a single by Trillo and an infield out by Swisher. The Cubs tied it in the sixth with two runs in the sixth, knocking out starter Ken Forsch. With one out, Bill Madlock walked and Rick Monday, Morales and Lacock followed with singles, the last two hits driving in the runs. Darold Knowles, 1-0, who blanked the Cards over the last three innings, gained his first victory for Chicago.

Knowles pitched out of a jam in the ninth, striking out McBride and Smith after the Cards had put runners on second and third with one out. Mets Victors MONTREAL (AP) The surging New York Mets made the most of only three hits, including run-scoring singles by Rusty Staub and Ed Kranepool, and beat the Montreal Expos 53 behind the combined nine-hit pitching of Jon Matlack and Rick Baldwin Friday.

The victory was the fifth in a row for the Mets. The Mets capitalized for two scoring innings on the wildness of Steve Rogers, 0-3, who was making his first appearance April 13. The Mets opened with three runs in the first inning. Walks to Felix Millan and Del Unser started the rally. Staub then lined his single to right, driving in Millan.

When right fielder Bombo Rivera's throw went wildly past third, Unser also scored and Staub raced to third. John Milner's grounder knocked in Staub. The Mets got their final two runs in the sixth. Wayne Garrett walked, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a groundpr and came home with the first run on a wild pitch by Rogers. Then, Staub and Milner walked before Kranepool followed with his RBI single.

The Expos nicked Matlack, 21, for a run in the sixth on pinch hitter Hal Breeden's single, a grounder and Mike Jorgensen's scoring single. They kayoed Matlack in the eighth, scoring twice on singles by Pepe Mangual and Jorgensen, a wild pitch, an RBI grounder by Barry Foote and Larry Parrish's single. King Praises Darrell Evans ATLANTA (AP) "There's no third baseman anywhere I would take over Darrell Evans in any respect," said Clyde King, manager of the Atlanta Braves.

The 27-year-old Evans has bolted out of the gate with the best start of his major league career, now entering it seventh season. He leads the National League in home runs with five and ranks among the league runs batted in leaders with 15. His .308 batting average is the best among Braves regulars through the first 17 games. And, no one could have expected this kind of start based on Evans' production in spring training. He only hit slightly more than .100 and gave little indication of his power.

The Braves weren't overly concerned, though. "The way he's hitting now is the way I said he would hit when he got out of the wind in Florida," said King. He was right. When the Braves broke camp for a couple of games in Birmingham, Evans responded with two long home runs. He's been connecting ever since.

"AH of a sudden, it just came," said Evans. "I'm seeing the ball so good, it looks this big," he added, indicating with his hands something the size of a volleyball. "When you're not hitting well, you don't pick up any said. Evans has inherited the No. 3 slot in the batting order vacated by baseball's all-time home run king, Hank Aaron, who was dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers last winter.

His start is similar to some Aaron had during his waning years with the Braves when he normally had outstanding home run production in April. Evans already has four game-winning RBI, only four less than he had in the entire 1974 season. The Braves began counting on Evans for his power in 1972 when he belted 19 and became the team's regular third baseman. Another former Brave third baseman, Eddie Mathews, helped the Californian, especially with his fielding. Then, in 1973 Evans crashed a career-high 41 home runs with 104 RBI.

Last year Evans tailed off to 25 homes and 79 RBI. Evans says he believes his great start has come from better concentration at the plate. If that's not the reason, he's not going to worry about it. "Whatever it is," he sayd, "it'sa good habit to be in." CENTIPEDE SOD 12Vi per sq. foot.
