You can't be too authentic with accents, he says. General de Gaulle, for example, has a comedy French accent which Janney can imitate to perfection. Janney doesn't dare use It. People, he says, would laugh him off the air. The inner circle of radio actors has Its share of prima donnas, but Janney isn't one of them.

He cheerfully takes voice tests, something considered below the dignity of many established actors, if it'll help him land a job. When he has been written out of the script of his regular shows, he discreetly voices the news around that he's at liberty and wouldn't mind picking up an extra buck. Too much pride in this business would cut Into his income. Like niMiiy others in his' profession, Janney looks on television without enthusiasm. A successful radio aqtor can't afford television right now.

A featured part, for example, In Kraft Television Theatre, which Involves peek's work and 30 or 40 hours of rehearsal, would bring in about $150, which Janney can earn on two half-hour radio shows. Ultimately, however, television may bring wholesale changes in the lives of Jarvncy and his colleagues. An actor as skilled as Janney has several 'dozen voices at his command, but he hasn't several dozen faces. Radio, he admits, has been good to him, but the wear and tear of rehearsal and the tremendous pace have taken their toll. Janney suspects he has an ulcer and he quite definitely has "radio stomach" (chronic' heartburn), the occupational disease of radio actors.

Considering the fountains of drama which wash the airlanes every day, it is rather a small one.
