Baker of Ouellette avenue. Draft to Age Of 35 Nearing Then Ottawa Will Start to Take Young Husbands OTTAWA, June 17. Action to raise the age limit for the calling up of men for compulsory military service from 30 to 35 is expected in the immediate future, it was learned Tuesday. This Is in line with statements made in the House of Commons several weks ago by the war services minister, Hon. J.

T. Thorson, who predicted such action would be taken In a short time. The extension of the age classes eligible for compulsory call wiU apply only to men who were unmarried or widowers without children in July, 1940. The next step after the calling of single men up to 35 is expected to be the calling of married men, starting with those who were 21 years old and married in July, 1940. The callup age was raised in March from 25 to 30 but the 25-to-30-age group produced fewer men than the 21-to-25 group.

The 30-to-35 group is not expected to produce as many the 25-to-30 group. The raising of the limit Is believed to have become necessary because the supply of men eligible for call under the present regulations is about used up in some of the war services dm sions. A jury of mountaineers has fixed a 20-year prison sentence for Mattie Pearl Manning, slender 14-year-old child widow, in the Distol slaying of her 35-year-old husband, Damon Manning. The jury, in less than an hour, convicted the little girl last night of second degree murder after hearing her testify in a low voice: I shot him. I thought he was going to shoot me. He threatened to kill me. Her father.

Prank Morgan, 50, was convicted of aiding and abetting in second degree murder and his punishment also was fixed at 20 years in prison. Defence attorneys said a new trial would be sought for Morgan and his daughter. Matti Pearl, wearing a blue print dress and chewing gum. told the jury that on the day before a breakfast table argument over a pair of paint-stained trousers, her husband had been singing tomorrow'll be a buryin day for you. She said she believed her husband was threatening her life as he tang.

She was the only defence witness. Sheriff Ben A. Creech said Mattie Pearl and her father first claimed that Manning had shot himself. Later, he added, Mattie Pearl admitted shooting her husband, a painter, on May 9. The officer further testified that Morgan told him last week he done the shooting instead of Mattie Pearl.
