After working on his father's Lulu Island farm he joined the CPR in 1900 as a fireman. For many years he was an engineer on locomotives travelling between Revelstoke and Field.

He was chief engineer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Revelstoke division, for more than 15 years. He was a past master of Kootenay Lodge No. 15, A.F. and A.M., a member of Gizeh Temple, Vancouver, and of the CPR Pioneers' Association. His wife, Adair, died in 1953.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. R. R. Mr. Keegan, who lived at 1615 Vine, Vancouver, died Sunday at a private hospital. He was 84.

He lived In Revelstoke from 1906 until 1956 and was an alderman from 1938 until 1948. A Vancouver police skin-diving team recovered his body from the shattered cabin of the boat seven hours later. 'TERRIFIC EXPLOSION' Eyewitness Tom Michaud, 19, of 195 Holyrood, North Van-couver, was working on the waterfront at the foot of Capi-lano when it happened.

"The troller grounded on a sandbar," he said, "and the tug Greenwing, which was working with us, pulled her off. "Then the tug pulled away and the man on the boat went below to start the motor, which he had slipped when he went aground. "Then there was a terrific explosion and the boat was just blown apart. It sank within seven or eight seconds. "There was no sign of the man." OFF CALAMITY SHOAL Vancouver police marked the area with a buoy and the diving team went down dur ing the 5 p.m.

J. WELCH dies at 64 H.J.Welch VICTORIA (CP) Former MLA for Comox, outstanding Rotarian and civic worker, Herbert John Welch of Quali cum Beach died here aged 64. Born in New Westminster he was educated there and in Victoria. During the Firsl World War he was a Lieuten ant in the Royal naval alf service. He was elected to the legislature in 1945 as a coalitionist and again in 1949.

In 1957 he was district gov. ernor of Rotary district 152 which includes all of Vancouver Island and part of Washington, He was also a past president of the Qualicum club and a prime mover in building the Rotary air strip there. Mr. Welch was the first district chairman of Qualicum village. He was founder and first president of the B.C.

Truck: Loggers Association and general manager of the Olympia Logging Company. In the legislature, he consistently fought against the policy of granting forest management licences. He was also a member of the board of the Winnipeg Shriner's hospital for crippled children. Mr. Welch had recently underwent a major operation in the Mayo Clinic, and was resting here at the home of his wife's sister, Mrs.

Percy B. Scurrah. Mr. Welch was married only last November in Vancouver to the then Mrs. Stella Gum-mow of Victoria.

Bill Beaton Funeral service has been held in New Westminster for Maj. Bill Beaton, 66, of 9082-152nd Street, North Surrey, civil defence co-ordinator for the Greater Vancouver mutual aid area since 1954. Maj. Beaton died Thursday, on the eve oi exercise Cooperation 111 of which he was the principal organizer. Born in Keewatin, Ont.

Maj. Beaton first joined the army when only 14 and was an original member of the Princess Patricias. He served overseas in the First World War, then joined the CNR as a special agent. During the Second World War he was commandant of a prisoner of war camp near Winnipeg. Maj.

Beaton is survived by his wife, Helen; two sons, William Winnipeg, and David at home; two daugh ters, Mrs. W. Barnsley, Trail, and Mrs. A. Rauhaus, Winni peg- Mrs.

Sarah Follis VERNON-Mrs. Sarah Jane Follis, 77, who had lived in B.C. 73 years, has been buried here. Born in Callander, Mrs. Follis moved to Vancouver in 1886 and to Vernon in 1927.
