despatches. to the Order of 1 Companion1 of the -Bath, one of-the distinguished titles of chivalry. His Majesty's 1946 New Year's Hribrs were 'conferred on virtually all ranks of the three armed services from "those of able seaman cook to the higher 'brackets of air marshal and major general. A proportion of the decorations went to women members of the three services. Of the Ottawa district total, 80 awards were made to Army personnel, 5 to the R.C.A.F.

and 28 to the Navy. In addition to the large number of honors won by Ottawa residents, decorations were decreed to service personnel from many points inV the including Rockcliffe, Westboro, Britannia, Hull, Deschenes, Gat-ineau Point, Pembroke, Renfrew, Fort CouJonge, Carleton Place, Arnprior, Petawawa, Chalk River, Lancaster, Kirkland Lake, South Porcupine and other rural and urban centres of the Ottawa arid St. Lawrence Valleys. Honor Uramia Personnel. Prominent among awards to personnel Canada's Navy-were those made tal men who served with H.M.C.S.! Uganda, Canadian cruiser which fought in co-oper ation with units of the Royahf in the Far East.

A number of other naval awards were riven to men for galantry in the explosion of tHe naval ammunition stores at Bedford Basin, Halifax. Naval cooks came into their own with the 1946 honors list, with awards 1 made to at least three. Of one, a citation said: He was an. excellent cook, thereby contributing greatly to the morale and efficiency of the A considerable proportion of the honors went to those who served chiefly in Ottawa dur-. lag the war years on various staff and headquarters tasks.
