Cordial New Year Greetings to Rabbi Schusterman "One of the things we're trying to get across to the people is that just because a person contributes to the JNF (Jewish National Fund) it doesn't necessarily make him a good Jew." Every person has a different reason for wanting to be a Chassid. One young man explained why he became a Luba-vitcher. "I was into drugs, sex and money. I thought life was a joke, but I was searching for what I considered to be truth. My plans were to go into medical school and to make more money," says Michael Es-treicher, a pleased follower of the Lubavitch movement after one year of participation.

After looking intensely into Lubavitch, Estreicher, 20 went to the New York Yeshiva where -he found a level in Lubavitch to which he could relate. "The Yeshiva had rooms to study and talk, "Estreicher continued. "I used to be interested in mathematics and the Talmud has the same hairsplitting logic; it is extremely precise. "The Talmud is something I could understand. Paul J.

"We are trying to give youth (people judged by the amount of knowledge rather than age) a chance to experience Judaism traditionally and authentically," states Rabbi Yisrael Schusterman, director of educational programs at the Lubavitch House. By Michelle Lane "The Lubavitch House has a friendly atmosphere that is quite different from a synagogue. I'm learning more here. One of the reasons is that, although most of the people here are older than me, they are not as old as the people in the synagogue," explains 14-year-old Barry Hersh. "I come from a Conservative background and my family keeps kosher." Lubavitch is one of the innumerable groups within the Chassidic sect, a group that keeps a strict observance of Jewish law.

Some people have charged that Chassidim was fine in the old country, but it is not practical for surviving in the contemporary world." But Rabbi Yisrael Shmotkin, director of the Milwaukee Lubavitch House at 3109 N. Lake disagrees. "I'm not talking about surviving, I'm talking about Rabbi Shmotkin ex-palins. "I'm not saying it is easy, sure it's hard. It is a complete change of life.

But, only 2 percent of the people who come to Lubavitch leave. "They don't drop it because they are disappointed, but because they couldn't make it. One of the reasons Lubavitch came to Milwaukee was to share Judaism and to give people an opportunity to spend a Shabbas weekend with us each week." Apparently some young people are getting the message Rabbi Shmotkin and the Lubavitch House are trying to convey because each Shabbas weekend about 20-25 men and women between the ages of 13-25 visit the House to celebrate the holiday. The Shabbas consisted of: dovening (praying), the traditional rituals of washing the hands, saying blessings over all food that was partaken and recreational activities including Ben LaKam of WAI ER'S Bridal Shop What's Happening; September 12-17 JSS-H lunch 13-15 BBYO Ha-cohavim chapter six-iold weekend. 12 JSS-H Game night 7:30 13 JSS-H closes at 5 p.m., BBYO Football Rosters due 14 JSS-H Coffeehouse 9 p.m.
