Voobus says the good thing about Islam is its spiritual force against atheistic communism, which keeps the people from materialism. Asked whether he thought Islam would survive the onslaught of Western technol- ogy, Voobus said it would.

"Arab genius and Arab spirituality will survive the impact of Westernization just as Islam has faced technology in non- Semitic nations like Iran and Turkey." able treasures" including manuscripts of the entire Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible), and documents revealing how Christian communities throughout Mesopotamia functioned in the First Century. 1 Western culture received its stimulus from the depth of intellectual works pro- duced in the centres of power in the Near East during the first centuries after Christ, he said. "The spread of Christianity in the Ancient World had a deep impact on Western culture. In Syria alone, the first Christian university was opened in 471 AD and taught not only Christian subjects but medicine and astronomy. They created literary works surpassing anything we are producing in our current atmosphere of Western decadence." Asked why the sweep of Islam effectively destroyed Christianity, Voobus said that for a Christian archaeologist there is something elating to know and observe that so much that is done in the name of Allah re He's handsome.

A cross between an older Ken doll and the younger Man from Glad. He's David Mainse, 41, and Canada's newest electronic evangelist, who speaks with honey-toned conviction about God's triumphant purposes to use Christian television to unite Canada and, 1 if possible, save the world. Whether he's praying to God, asking for money or dwelling on a sin-to-salva-; tion testimony, the permanent-press pancake smile never leaves his face. For the two-and-a-half hours he's on air his carefully modulated voice is filled with "praise the Lord," drawing out the vowel in JEEsus just long enough to get an "amen" out of his adoring studio audience. It's God on prime time.

Then a deep anger begins to boil inside and wells to the surface, momentarily spilling over. His eyes moisten, his head shakes, his fists clench slightly, and for a moment, words fail him. Then, Dr. Arthur Voobus, 68, Syriac scholar and reader of nine Near-Eastern languages grips his chair and pours out his story. He recalls, in vivid detail, the Communist takeover of his native Estonia, when as a Lutheran pastor and classical scholar he fled to Germany in the face of the advancing Soviets and there, arrested by the Nazis, felt the pain and privation of Mecklenburg concentration camp.

From the Communist heel and the Nazi jackboot, Voobus fled to America with thousands of other refugees, only to find thousands of Protestant churches under the aegis of the National Council of Churches busy setting up "dialogue" with the Communists to find "common ground" for agreement. This horrified Voobus and from his position as senior professor at the Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary he wrote a pamphlet called The Threat of Communism and the Task of the Churches. In it, he lambasted ecclesiastical politicians for not speaking on behalf of the oppressed, and for losing the awe in the face of nameless suffering. Voobus describes in detail how the Kremlin has drawn in many church leaders into co-operation with Soviet undercover agents. He recalls how the former NCC leader Rev.

Eugene Carson Blake wanted contact with the Soviet "church" and was warned by leaders of the exile churches that the Russian Orthodox Church was little more than a puppet of the state. Blake rejected that advice. Voobus cited Alexander Solzhenitsyn who condemned Russian Orthodox Archbishop Pimen for selling out his church to the Communists. In the face of these accusations Blake was silenced, said Voobus, but the damage had been done. "In 30 years there has been no change.

My country, once predominantly Christian sees no sign of the hammer and sickle being lifted from it. "The WCC has not changed. It has sold its Biblical heritage for a mess of ecumenical pottage and sold us down the river of theological liberalism. Morning Wonhip 11:00 a.m. Miniitor: Rev. G. M. Philpt NADIAN rCA evangelical success story to the televi-, sion networks, and, if it can be believed, the ratings are good.

In Vancouver for a week to hustle bucks for his Toronto-based travelling salvation road show, Mainse told a luncheon of followers that daily Christian TV is the only hope to save Canada from sinners like Rene Levesque who would divide us, and that "God is going to allow us to get the job done." Brave words. But Mainse has, in less than a year, rebuilt a rented studio in downtown Toronto. He bought cameras owned at one time by a TV company showing blue movies, "we just prayed the evil right out of those machines," and is beginning to make both the CBC and CTV networks just a little bit nerv- ous with his ratings. His come-on, structured exactly along the lines of the 700 Club and PTL (Praise the Lord) networks, now the fourth largest in the U.S., is reaching the great urban unwashed in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. And the newly converted, hooked on Jesus, come by the busload to fill his studio to tell their Story of changed lives.

Mainse is in "heaven." Even the $2.1 million he needs for the fiscal 1977-78 year fails to deter him. His telethon in Vancouver last week netted a cool in one-time pledges and another in monthly pledges. He was looking for $100,000 and $25,000 respectively, but "God has his timing and it'll come in, praise the Lord," he says confidently. The money given is put into the Bank of Christ, says Mainse. The interest rates are excellent and the return is in saved souls.

He says he makes less than $20,000 a year. Clearly sacrifice is in. It's all a labor of love. The people who come to testify on his show have all been "born again." There are alcoholic salesmen who now have purpose to their lives. Weary housewives now sing for Jesus peeling spuds.

Then there are the evangelical superstars who draw big crowds and viewer-ship. The Charles Colsons, Eldridge Cleavers and Pat Boones. The Hollywood jet set, who, between bouts of stardom and depression, angst and fame, "find Christ" and shout about their transform-ed lives. The TV evangelists have triumphed where the Hollywood moguls failed. It's 10 seconds to air.

"The WCC has been successful in eliminating compassion towards the victims of communism. Furthermore, the genuine concern for the fate of Christians under Communist tyranny has been branded by those same church leaders as hysterical anti-communism." Asked how he felt about Richard Wurm-brandt, the anti-Communist crusader who spent 14 years in Eastern European jails, Voobus said he had the deepest respect for his Christian witness and was loyal to his calling, but felt uneasy about some of his methods. But Voobus's criticisms of U.S. churches extends further. In an interview in Vancouver while attending Estonian Lutheran Church celebrations, Voobus expressed the opinion that Western Christendom was on the brink of spiritual bankruptcy.

"There is a spiritual and moral complacency which reveals a frightening insen-sitivity which often comes close to emptiness, judged by Christian standards. "This is the earmark of a Christianity which in one part has lost momentum. Its interest lies elsewhere erecting new sanctuaries and increasing church membership. "There is a great preoccupation with self-concerned interest, quarrels between formulas and traditions; more and different kinds of busy activities are invented to keep people occupied with the housekeeping of the ecclesiastical organizations." Voobus, who has spent a large portion of his life digging among archaelogical ruins in the Middle East, notably Syria, says he found in that country "fantastic, unbeliev Evangelist David Mainse Miniitor: Rev.
