TJ with Doctor in the house IISSMlil i lillli LIGlOiM RE iiipipsij! BILL DUNFORD, Editor Saturday, September 14, 1974 dark the answer was not to point to a text be not afraid, God is with you" but rather to take the meaning of the Biblical words filtered through the parents' experience and then communicate it to the child. "Many parents of a past generation have stuffed doctrine down throats because it is objectively true: but if the child does not perceive the reality of those truths In the parent then all hell can break loose spiritually, morally and psychologically." "The most recent research into child behaviour at the secular level shows children pick up non-verbal signals quicker than the spoken word. If parents talk about God's love, and fail to communicate what that means in their lives the child wjll quickly relegate this to the unreal, and abandon it." Richards feels that Christian education is not the making of a product but an outgoing process of growing in grace and Christ-likeness, "We must not only explain the Biblical concept, what it means and how it applies to our children but also what it means in the reality of our own lives." "We wonder why children are turned off by the church. They are first turned off by us. In many cases as parents we are not living and acting out biblical truths as we know them'.

The result is a double standard. The child cannot always articulate the failure in his parents' declared intentions but turns away in disgust at what he sees." Richards illustrated by suggesting that for parents who have children afraid of the By DAVID VIRTUE There are medical doctors, animal doctors, witch doctors and now church doctors. These are men trained to inject local churches with spiritual vitamins. One such aspect of the body's activity in need of spiritual treatment is the Chris-tain education of children. For many churches, traditional Sunday schools have dropped off.

In others the methods could be out of date For a small but increasing number of churches however, Christian education takes place in families and cell groups rather than in large gatherings. Perhaps North America's most noted church health care specialist is Dr. Larry Rich' ards, author of some 25 books, a former professor of theology and now director of Renewal Research Association, Phoe- nix, Arizona. He is typical of a new gen- Tivo series announced at Cathedral Two series of lecture -discussions will be held in Christ Church Cathedral Wednesday at 7:30 pm. starting Oct.

He is associate professor of New Testament at Vancouver School of Theology 36 eration of pastors who see the function and role in a new light. Speaking to more than 100 pastors, theologians and laymen at West Vancouver Baptist recently, Rjchards spelled out his formula for a healthy church, not in terms of theologically aware and educated teachers impressing Bible doctrine on children, but in terms of spiritually aware parents who live the reality of Christian doctrine in their own lives. "We must educate parents to communicate Christian truths to their children. Children will only believe the content of the Biblical stories they hear.when they see their parents relating those truths to their own lives." Richards impressed the need for parents' to listen to their children; expose and talk about their feelings to them, above all let children see both the external and internal reality of their Christian life. Arthur Hadley twist Tithing, the old Christian appeal of giving 10 per cent of one's wealth to the church, is a matter between an individual and his conscience, with perhaps his pocketbook running interference.

But it is a personal thing, not subject to scrutiny. Yet in this modern age, with depreciating returns and people hoping for some sort of guarantee, this has to be a twist. An electrical worker in Miami, Hugh McNatt, sued his church, Allapattah Baptist, for $800. The amount was Ws ten per cent. The charge was that Pastor Donald Manuel had promised "blessings and awards" to a person who tithed.

Nothing, claimed McNatt, bad happened in the three years since his donation. However, looking back at it, he didn't lose out. A good Samaritan, Texas businessman, Alton Newell, heard the story and decided to repay the $800 for the church. "I sympathize with anyone who gives money to the church and sits back and expects God immediately to hand it back with interest, by some specific act," Newell said in a letter to lawyers who dropped the suit. McNatt, probably a bit embarrassed, didn't comment.

He didn't say where he was worshipping come Sundays, either. New organist Susan Driver, a graduate of Lord Byng and UBC, is the new organist and choir director at St. Philip's Anglican Church. Previously at Shaughnessy Heights United, Miss Driver studied piano with Phyliss Schuldt and Robert Rogers, organ with Gordon Atkinson, Hugh McLean and Patrick Wedd. She will direct both the children's and senior choirs.

Psalm 37:16 Hard may be your lot here below, ye suffering saints of the most High as regards external matters; painful may be the exercises through which you almost daily pass, through the rebellion and desperate wickedness of your carnal mind; grievous temptations may be your continual portion; many a pricking thorn and sharp brier may lie in your path; and so rough and rugged may be the road, that at times you may 'feel yourself of all men to be the most miserable; and so indeed you would be but for the grace of God in your heart now and the glory prepared for you beyond the grave; Yet with it all, were your afflictions and sorrows a thousand times heavier, well may it be said of "Happy, thrice happy, art thou, Israel! Whom upon earth need you envy if you have the grace of God in your heart? With whom would you change, if ever the love of God has visited your soul? Look around you; fix your eyes upon the man or woman who seems surrounded with the greatest amount of earthly happiness, and then ask your own conscience, "Would I change with thee, thou butterfly of fashion, or with thee, thou gilded dragon-fly, that merely livest thy little day: sunning thyself for a few hours beneath the slimmer sun with all your entertainments and then sinking into the dark pit and dismal pool of destruction which awaits thee at evening-tide?" Then with all your-cares at home and abroad with all your woes and trials, sunk under which you feel yourself at times one of the most miserable beings that can crawl along in this vale of tears would you change with anybody, and lose your reward? however healthy, or rich, or favoured with the largest amount of family prosperity, if at the same time become destitute of the and long suffering mercies of God? rREE: UPON REQUEST List of Christian Books (or children and adults Write: VALLEY GOSPEL MISSION United Churches UNITED CHURCH DIRECTORY NORTH SHORE VANCOUVER WEST VANCOUVER UNITED CHALMERS, 121 A Heteleck CHURCH, 21 it sedEseatnelt Raa.
