gATUEtJAT EVENING, FEBRUARY 19. Struck by even? ing a heavy tbunder stortn, accompanied by severe lightning, passed over Staten Island. At about six o'clock the large four story building, No. 4, on the Americau cotton docks at Tompkinsville. was struck by light? ning, setting fire to a number of cotton bale? on the lop floor.

In a short time the entire building, containing about 000 bales of cotton, was enveloped in flames. Toe rain continued to pour down in and the lightning was still very severe. The wind was blowing light from the south, being fa? vorable for the safety of the other building and docks, as tho building where the lire originated was situated to the north of the other building. Tho fire department, how? ever, was unable to get the tierce flatnrs under control, and then uuderiook to pro toct the other buildings. It is expected that the loss will amount to about $250,000.

There was a rumor atloat that the building had been set on fire by some of the but this report was positively denied. The adjoining warehouses, Nos. 5 and 11, were also destroyed, with about 10,000 bales of cotton. The total los3 is estimated at $350, 000, which i3 fully covered by insurance in New York companies. Kailboad after two o'clock yesterday morning the Baltimore express of the Pittsburg Division, which left Pittsburg about nine o'clock in the evening, cij entering Hyudmon Station, about fifteen miles west cf Cumberland, dashed into a freight train, which was standing on a siding, doing much damage to the freight cars and engine of the express train, besides blocking road for several hours.

John Younkin, the engineer of the express, was badly hurt, and will probably die from his injuries. It appears that an engine bad been switched previous to the time of the arrival of the express, and the switch left open. Tho engineer of the express sig? nalled for the switch as ho approached the Btation, but it was too Into to avert the dis? aster. Sleet storms rugetl throughout Minnesota, and, by way of vari tion, certain portions of Nebraska were sprinkled by mud showers. Eust of Chica? go thunder ur.d lightning played an exciting pan in tho weather melange. In New York, Baltimore and Chicago the thunder storms were very severe. To this varied weather programme Missouri contributed an earthquake shock.
