THE Friday, Jan. 11, 1957 Spanish heritage revealed in designer's costumes 26 Click of castanets creates mood LANDO'S FUR1 CLEARANCE Before Estevez turned his creative talents to fashion he had planned on becoming an architect His innate eye for line and color was apparent with every costume modelled. He prefaced By WINN1FRED MATHER Province Fashion Editor NEW YORK Today's snowflurries and threats of a 15 degree temperature were left far behind as calypso music and the haunting strains of steel jruitars transported all of us to sunny faraway places. Thoughts of exotic bios-Boms, colorfully gay, flamenco dancers and the intriguing click of castanets filled the air in the ball It brought back memories of the dress I modelled for Mr. Rentner in the show arranged by the New York Dress Institute for the 1950 international banking convention; of flowing white chiffon, the jewel encrusted off-shoulder top was banded in wild mink, and then, as now, it was only a showpiece and not intended for home consumption.

"THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE" was a nice finale to this busy day and I did succeed in staying awake. Margare Ness, the Canadian publicist tor Helena Rubinstein, and a friend of Toronto-born Di-ana Van-Der Vlis who plays the ingenue In this entertaining comedy, arranged Jor an after-theatre visit for the Canadian contingent of press women with the stars of the play. Diana, who lived in Vancouver In 1949, is only 21 years old and this play is her Broadway debut. Quite a triumph for this pert blonde and only the beginning judging from the success of tonight's performance. We're on the home stretch now.

Tomorrow's story will wind up the spring and summer fashion picture. noon silk prints and her costume-making capelcts. Both of these designers' fash-Ions are available in Vancouver. HIGHLIGHT of Maurice Rent-ner's presentation was a delightfully new version of the tunic silhouette, which has been a steady performer in nearly everj collection viewed during these press week showings. Bell-shaped and carved with blossom-like smoothness, this tunic shown over a rccd-slim underskirt, went from daytime alpaca wools to afternoon silk twills and evening chiffons and pure silk tussahu.

Designed especially by Mr. Rentner for the forthcoming March of Dimes ball and fashion show at the Waldorf-Astoria later this month, It was the star of the show, "the belle of the ball." Precious crown sable rimmed the slender skirt and the while chiffon bell-shaped tunic was framed in a portrait collar of the same luxurious fur. At a cost of $5,000. it certainly will never be what the trade calls a "runner" but for a designer it gives an opportunity for an "all stops out" designing spree. Often shoulder halos of giant stiffened chiffon roses gave a lei-like beauty to bare shoulders.

A favorite description of his was "isn't this a sexy, siren of a dress." found this as disquieting as if it had come from a babe in arms it seemed to belie this designer's almost prep-school boyishness. I FOUND the whole collection elegant in Us refreshing simplicity. The happiest note is that these dresses are being duplicated in Canada by Warsh of Toronto and will be in Vancouver stores this spring. Earlier In the day Hattie Carnegie, Maurice Rentner and Adcle Simpson told their fashion stories. Each have hits on their hands.

The Carnegie collection, always a joy to see, excelled In their usual group of jacketed dresses and suits that have a timeless, ageless charm about them. SUBTLE DETAILING of bias tabbed slot and fob pockets, ingenious button closings and flatteringly placed flanges are a signature of this house. This year they seemed to he done with more affection than ever. Adele Simpson delighted everyone with her subtly draped after I i If 4. if i lw J' Ik1 i 5 'if-.

I hi? commentary by saying that black was 'always his favorite medium, but it's what he does with it that makes it colorful. HE SHOWED his true heritage with a group of zesty prints and colors he had dyed exclusively for his collection in exotic shades of bougalnvillca, -Caribbean blue and sunny, earth brown. His favorite fabric was the universally popular silk line. He defied any tendency towards drapes, midriffs, or gimmicks by hewing to an unbroken line of peeled-egg smoothness and then deftly creating high drama through his imaginative use of arc-shaped and cross-over bandings to frame the neckline. This gives the Illusion of cover-up to daringly bare backs and shoulders on ninny of his jacketed and la'e day dresses.

FOR WALKING he has replaced the back kick pleat with a well-engineered low placed fi.shtnil, which, in turn, (or his evening dresses develops into an authentic flamenco skirt.
