Mclnnes, one of the last of a prominent group of writers developed in young Canada, died in a nursing home here Sunday. He was 83. Born -in. Dresden, October 29, 1887, he was best known for his lusty, good-humored, often sophisticated verse, written from the same generation as Sir Charles G. D.

Mr. Craig, in more than a century of living, had been active until recently, and lea than a month ago celebrated Jii 102nd birthday. Mr. Craig i birthday oh January 15 had become an Institution in Ottawa and aince hU 100th birthday had become almost a civic affair in which the nly as well as the King and Queen paid tribute to him.

He died at the home of his sun, Archie Craig, of City View, whore he had been residing. A life-long resident of the district, he was born at Merivale in 1849 Mr. Craig was the last surviving fighting man of the second Fenian Raid which took place in 1870 when an invading force from the United State was repulsed at Trout River, Que. For his courage in this border battle he was awarded the Queen Victoria Medal. He returned to Merivale where he lived quietly as a farmer, always taking an est in the progress of his com- munity and his church.

Baker, also of City View, Mayor Goodwin paid his respects to the centenarian, as did also officials of the British North America Orange Order of which he was a life member, and of the Nepean Branch of the Canadian Legion which made him a life member a few years ago. Members of his family who survive, are two Archie and Alonzo C'raiK. and the two daughters, Mrs. Davidson, and Mrs. Baker, all of City View; aUo 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Thirteen years later he gave up private practice to become director of the Red Cross Ontario Division. Under his leadership the: division expanded in many fields and it was during his term of office as director that the outpost hospital service in isolated communities of North-em Ontario was organized.

At the request of the League of Red Cross Societies, Dr. Routley spnt part of 1828 in Paris as temporary medical director at the headquarters of the societies. A month after the start of World War II he went to England to direct the establishment of the Canadian Red Cross overseas organization in advance of the arrival of the first Canadian troops. He was a founder of the York County Medical Society and the first president of the Canadian Hospital Association from 1930 to 1934. He had been honorary secretary of the Ontario Hospital Association since 1924.

He was a Fellow of the Academy -t Medicine and was also a member of the Rotary, the United Church, the Masonic Order, Canadian and Empire Clubs. He is survived by his widow, the former Gertrude Fry, whom he married in 1908; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Kennedy; and four brothers, Frank, James, Al and Dr. Clarence Routley. Funeral service will, be held at 2.30 p.m.

Garrett chapel and was conducted by Rev. Serson Clarke. Interment was in the family plot in St. James cemetery, Hull. Mrs.

Symers died Friday at the home of her sister. Mrs. H. H. Allen, 499 Lyon street.

Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia in 1897, he started his career as a lawyer. He was called to the BC Bar in 1893. But he joined the Klondyke gold rush in 1898, though not as a prospector, lie was secretary to the Bering Sea Claims Commission and while in the Arctic began putting down impressions which later turned up in the form of poems and novels. In 1901, he was secretary of the BC Salmon Fisheries Commission. Later, in Ottawa, he drafted Federal laws dealing with Immigration and narcotics.

In 19T6 he went to China where he discussed railroad promotion with Sun Yat Sen. In the following year he obtained a concession to modernize transportation in Canton. Backed by Chinese capital, he tore down the ancient city wall to build a boulevard circling the city centre and widened other streets to make possible a motor-bus transit system. Civil wars interrupted this venture- in 1922 and he returned to Vancouver. He published several articles and books on the Orient.

He did not begin to write poetry until he was 40, but published several volumes of verse. He continued to write until shortly before his death. His last published work was "In the Old of My which came out two years ago. Some of his work still remains to be published. Mrs.

Samuel Cookson Dies in Hospital Mrs. Samuel Cookson, of 79 Park avenue, a of Ottawa since 1933, died Monday in hospital. She was in her 80th year. Mrs. Cookson, the former Barbara Plumb, was the daughter of the late Mr.

and Mrs. Thomas Plumb, and was born at London, Ont. Surviving, besides her husband, are five daughters. Misses Jocelyn Barbara. Rhoda, Beatrice May, and Del-ena Margaret Cookson, all of Ottawa, and Mrs.

Thompson, of Binscarth; also two grandchildren. The body is at Hulse and Play-fair's from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday to St. John's Anglican Church for service at two o'clock. Rev. Terence J.

13. (Special I Mrs. Jacob Dixon, one of Winchester's oldest residents and mother of J. L. Dixon, local businessman, died at her home on Church street Monday afternoon.

Born at Fournier. 89 ago. she was the former Maria Gates, daughter of the late Charles Gates and his wife, Mary Nicholson, both members of the earliest pioneer families to settle in Prcscott County. She first came to Winchester in 1894. when she and her husband operated a hotel here.

They then moved to Ottawa, and returned to this place when her husband established an undertaking and furniture business. She was a member of the Winchester United Church, and had been active in the work of the Women's Associations, the Red Cross and other women's organizations in the village. She was affectionately known as "Grandma Dixon" to all of the community. She was married 72 years ago, and her husband died in 1825. She was the last member of her family.

The funeral service, to be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at her home on Church street, will be conducted by the pastor of Winchester United Church. Rev. Norman J. Thomas.

(JPi The ashes of pianist-band leader Eddy Duchin were strewn over the Atlantic Ocean by a navy plane following funeral services attended by more than 400 notables.
