Cougar Terror On Island Spreads To Saanich Farms VICTORIA, July creating a short-lived reign of terror at Beacon Hill and the exclusive Rockland avenue district of Victoria, cougars have started depredations in Saanich, and farmers report nightly losses of poultry and other small stock believed to have fallen prey to the night prowlers.

John de Buste, a berry-picker, is the first Saanich man to report having actually seen a cougar recently. He and Joe Hudson were going home Wednesday night when a big, black form believed to be a cougar, stole across their path. De Buste hastened on to his home and returned with Elijah Brundage, another berry man, both armed with shotguns. Brundage's dog caught the scent of the animal and followed it into the forest, but the pursuit was in vain. Seeks Opening of Rogers Street, But May Have to Move Plant Application for the opening up of Rogers street, from the high-water mark for 100 feet north, was made by Mr.

R. H. Tupper, on behalf of Vernon Buckerfeld, at the civic building committee Monday afternoon. It was referred to a committee for report at the finance committee meeting on Wednesday. Mr.

Tupper explained that Rogers street was a public road as far as the high-water mark. From that point it had been filled in for a width of sixtysix feet and a length of about 100 feet by the city, whose property it is. He asked that it be opened up as a public road to, order to give access to the premises of Vernon Buckerfield on the, was waterfront. pointed out that a shipbuilding plant was being by V. M.

the council will hold a public hearing of objections to the zoning by-law, which has been considering for the chast' month. This date was on Monday night when the council held a special sitting. The by-law has been thoroughly discussed in committee and all the proposed zones considered and in its opinion the measure is complete. However, it is necessary under the terms of the Town Planning Act to give any person whose property is affected an opportunity to make objection to any of the proposed zones. It is planned to prepare copies of a map detailing the various zones and have this circulated in the municipality.

A supply of copies will also be available at the Municipal Hall next week. Late William Lockwood Of Moose Jaw, Former Vancouver Resident Word has been received from Moose Jaw of the death recently of William Wallace Lockwood, for twelve years a resident of Vancouver, and before his retirement one of the largest wheat growers in Saskatchewan. Mr. Lockwood was born in Ontario sixty- nine years ago and farmed in that province for many years. In 1902 he moved west to Moose Jaw and was there until his retirement, twelve years ago.

He is survived by a son, Howard, of Moose Jaw, and three daughters, Mrs. W. G. Cox of Moose Jaw, Mrs. Elwood Cox, and Mrs.
