Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle Keep pressuring Shamir: peacenik Force, high-level officials of the Jewish Agency and leaders of the mainstream kibbutz movement, Jacoby said. Americans for Peace Now has 10,000 members and a budget of $1.5 million, according to its president. Milwaukeeans Hava Mendelberg, Esther Leah Ritz and Max Samson are on the national board of the organization, which formerly was known as Friends of Peace Now. Status quo is perilous Peace Now and its U.S. friends contend that trading land 'Only a political solution will provide real 5T-7- 'j majority of security experts agree that only a political solution to the conflict will provide real security," he said.

He argued that the Palestinian conflict creates a focus for military conflict, such as Iraq's attempt to create pan-Arab support for the Palestinians during the Persian Gulf war. Jacoby added that the Iraqi Scud missiles showed that territory offers increasingly less protection in modem warfare. To those who say there are no Palestinians with whom to discuss peace because of their support of Iraq, Jacoby responds that Peace Now "severely criticized the Palestinians for their support of Iraq and its Scud attacks against Israel." The result, he continued, was that West Bank Palestinian leadership "clarified its stance that it didn't support the invasion of Kuwait and that it opposed the bombing of civilians." Critics have charged that Peace Now, its American supporters and their ideas are traitorous or damaging to Israel. In response, Jacoby said the organizations work closely with the elected representatives of Israel "in the best traditions of Israeli democracy." By Andrew Muchin fTW Chraakfc Maff Imagine this: Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir leads Israel into bilateral negotiations with Arab states and the Palestinians under superpower auspices, then backs out. He calls early Knesset elections and runs on a platform of heroically defending Israeli land.

This scenario could occur, says Jonathan Jacoby, president of Americans for Peace Now, "unless all along the road there has been pressure on Shamir from Israelis to be flexible on negotiations." Of course, Shamir also could "rise to the occasion after the conference and engage in give-and-take," Jacoby said during a recent visit here. In that case, he continued, Shamir's Likud party would have the support of Israel's Peace Now peace movement and the Zionist opposition parties, including Labor, Israel's second largest party. That would prevent the government from collapsing even if some of Likud's coalition members bolted over the peace negotiations. Jacoby noted that Peace Now, the Israeli peace movement, brought a delegation of members of Knesset to Washington, D.C., in spring to make that very point. Peace Now was created in 1978 by 348 senior Army reserve officers who wanted then-Prime Minister Menachem Begin to negotiate with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

He is B'njie, a Lhasa Apso puppy given to the center by a nurse there, Margaret Jean Bethes. One of B'njie's favorite fans is Alter Sneider-mann (above), who walks and plays with the dog. The dog is named after the center's retired administrator, Ben Lane. In keeping with center regulations, B'njie, of course, eats only kosher food.

Twerski will lead classes about holidays would be the best solution to the Israeli conflict with the Palestinians. "The status quo not only is corroding Israel from inside, but is jeopardizing the security of the state," Jacoby said. "As long as Israel rules over 1.7 million Palestinians, Israel cannot be truly Jewish or truly democratic," he explained. 'Two peoples in the same land with different laws creates very difficult moral dilemmas." He said the "rising anger of the Palestinians is being expressed in increasingly violent that threaten the safety of all citizens." Territory, he continued, is no guarantor of peace.
