Franklin D. Roosevelt, in a speech in the House on Jews reaching Israel, said, "And vivid in their minds was the memory of the society ican Jewry was they had left of the all-pervad ing anti-Semitism and vicious per secution; of the economic slavery; of the hopelessness of Jewish life in Russia and Poland and Hungary Hail McCloy Stand on Anti-Semitism in West Germany German Leader Denies Revived Nationalism, Nazi Connections MUNICH (JTA) Jewish circles here expressed satisfaction with the statement in Frankfort by American High Commissioner John J. McCloy to the effect that the recent wave of anti-Semitic incidents in West Germany is a disgrace for every German. Issued as a result of recent attacks on Jewish cemeteries and a mob demonstration against a partly-Jewish girl in Hamburg who testified against the producer of the Nazi film "Jew Suess," the statement emphasized that the incidents injure every German. Mr.

McCloy urged every citizen and the police take steps to stop them." Meanwhile, West German Deputy Chancellor Franz Hluecher, leader of the Free German Democratic Party, denied charges by the World Jewish Congress that there has been a revival of nationalism and anti-Semitism since made by Polish Ambassador Jo-zef Wini i through a statement commemorating the seventh anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. And they wanted they wish their Fellowship to bear," Mr. Stone went on, "just as the student may decide which of the three camps he wishes to attend Winterdale, Pennsylvania; Santa Susans, California; or Hender-sonville, North Carolina." The original Brandeis Camp Institute attracted 50 students who spent one month on a rented site in Amherst, New Hampshire. At present the Brandeis Youth Foun.

dation serves as national headquarters for the three camps and reports that in 1949, 454 campers from 134 campuses and 194 communities in 40 states attended the Institutes. For ten years the key has been "Learning Through Students work, live, study, play and pray together Discussions are led by staff members or visiting specialists. The subjects include Jewish life in America, world Jewry, achievements and problems of Jewry in Israel leadership and programming. Dancing and singing help demonstrate group work principles. none of that." Chile Hot or Cold? 11 Hilton rrrlntmaD NEW YORK (Special) Dewey D. Stone, newly elected president of the Brandeis Youth Foundation, pointed out that scholarships to the Brandeis Camp Institutes were available. "In honor of our tenth anniversary celebration, we are offering additional scholarships for candidates," said Mr. Stone, "who are invited to register at once. We welcome applications from young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who have proven their leadership ability or who can furnish proof of their leadership potential." Ten years ago Mr.

Justice Louis D. Brandeis actively encouraged Dr. Shlomo Bardin to create a program to train young adults for community leadership within a short period. The community and the campus became the preliminary testing ground for leadership qualities, and the recommendation of established leaders have since been an entrance requirement. The foundation supplies all tuition scholarships and seeks to match tuition with maintenance scholarships.

Fee paying candidates must meet all the same requirements as full scholarship applicants. The Foundation is supported almost entirely by the members of the Brandeis Youth Fellowship. The Fellowship coincides with the length of the Institute which the student selects. A two week Institute requires $100; a four week Institute $175; and a seven week Art Institute $300. "My country, where every citizen of Jewish origin is now considered equal before the law, protected by the law and where Jewish community life is supported from the state budget; drew out of the terrible experiences of the last war also a well-remembered lesson to devote all of our material and moral resources to that his U. S. -supported Chilean regime has nurtured anti-Seruit-ism. Gonzales Videla was vice-president of the World Christian Committee for Palestine and it is believed that his personal attitude is pro-Israel, with many manifestations on record of his friendship for Chile's 25,000 Jews. On the other hand, liberals have protested his pro-Franco leanings.

It is generally conceded that the charges of anti-Semitism heard in Washington originated from Gonzales Videla's political opponents, including the famed poet and former Chilean senator, Pablo Naru-da. However, in 1949 the American Jewish Committee reported: "In Chile, there was an increase in anti-Semitism. Thus, on February 3,1948, the Circulo Israelita, the largest Jewish institution in Santiago, was damaged by an explosion." (Copyright, 1950) the rising wave of anti-Semitism have been addressed to the West German Government by German Candies organizations, it was learned. The DUSSELDORF (JTA) Only in the French zone ol Germany have the occupation authorities aken prompt and effective measures to check the desecration of Jewish cemeteries, it was emphasized here by Karl Marx, editor of the German-Jewish newspaper Juediiiche Allgemeine Zeitung. Mr. Marx reported that when a Jewish cemetery was desecrated in a small village near Trier, in the French zone, the French authorities penalized the entire population, setting them to work the cemetery in order. Since then there have been no desecrations of Jewish cemeteries in the French zone.

The number or desecrations of Jewish cemeteries in the American and British zones of Germany, Mr. Marx said, is mounting to such a point that the Jews have given up repotting them to the authorities. The British authorities have so far taken no decisive action whatsoever on cases reported to them, he declared. He also pointed out that not a single German com munity offered to rebuild the synagogues destroyed by the Nazis during the Hitler regime. The League of German Student Associations adopted a resolution condemning the new wave of anti-Semitism in West Germany.

Simultaneously, German students, meeting at Mainz, in the French zone, expressed concern over the series of anti-Semitic "incidents," and called for restitution of Jewish property seized by the Nazis and correction of "moral injustices" done to the Jews. The latest desecration of a Jewish cemetery occurred at Klein-bardorf, in Frankonia, where 16 tombstones were felled and ten others damaged by German farmers who, according to the local police, were cutting down trees for firewood. A protest by Dr. Philip Auerbach, Bavarian Commissioner for Persecutees, in a letter to the provincial Premier, Hans Ehard, asked that the persons responsible be punished. He insisted that the damage did not result by accident.

The Rumanians, however, used a much different slant. The same week the Polish Ambassador issued his pro-Jewish statement, the Rumanian Legation in Washington published an attack on Israel and Prime Minister David Ben Gurion.

In an article based on comments in "Romania Libera" entitled "About 'Concerns' of Mr. Ben Gurion," the Rumanians attacked Ben Gurion with hammers and sickles of invective. Questioning Ben Gurion's concern over the fate of Jews in 'countries where danger of persecution exists' such as Iraq and Rumania," the Israel Premier is taken to task. Rumania Raises Question The question is raised of "whether Ben Gurion has, or has not, heard anything about schools whose classes are conducted in Yiddish, textbooks in Yiddish, literature and theater in Yiddish existing in the Rumanian People's Republic today." (The Rumanians conveniently omit their harsh restrictions on Jewish emigration to Israel a restriction about which Ben Gurion has no doubt It is impossible that a Premier is not aware of such things. It is more probable that certain Prime Ministers need such alleged 'dangers of persecution' They need them in order to slander the regimes of these countries at which working people the world over look with love and hope; they need them to cover up persecutions perpetrated by them against working people.

The current situation in Israel presents a whole scale of such persecutions," the article continues. After enumerating extensive examples showing clearly the worsening of conditions of the Israel working population, and pointing to the enslavement of that country by imperialists, Romania Libera refers to statements of "Socialist" Ben Gurion, to the effect that "Israel will never be a Communist country." The Rumanians called the Israel Premier's affirmation "laughable." I'. S. freed to Revise It Policy In Germany NEW YORK (JTA) The American Government was urged to revise its policy on Germany at a meeting held here to protest the revival of Nazism as evidenced by the growing number of anti-Semitic incidents and other recent anti democratic developments there.

More than 2,000 persons attended the meeting which was sponsored by the American Jewish Congress at Town Hall. Sen. Guy M. Gillett, one of the principal speakers, wurned that the present U. S.

policy in Germany could lead to a third world war which the democracies could lose. Other speakers included Brig. Gen. Telford Taylor, former U. S.

Chief Counsel at the War Crimes Trials in Nuremberg, and Dr. Hobert S. Marcus, political director of the World Jewish Congress, a former U. S. Army Chaplain who was active in the work of rescuing survivors of Nazi concentration camps.

authorities. The details of the loan were worked out from a proposal put forth by the Joint Distribution Committee which participated in the negotiations. The JDC has advanced 600,000 si-hillings to the community for a home for the aged in Vienna. Of the 300 patients who will use its facilities, 100 are expected to be completely bedridden. VIENNA (JTA) Additional details of the recently announced 5.01)0,000 schilling loan to the Vienna Jewish Community by the Austrian Government were made public here.

The 20-year loan, which was made against anticipated receipt of heirless property funds by the community, will be used for vocational retraining of community members and for supplying a works project for unemployed Jews here. The community had to pledge some of its real property as collateral for the loan in the event the restitution program is not put into effect as now visualized by the government. The funds advanced by the government will come from blocked accounts. Approval for the transaction was given by the American open Friday night, 12 noon 'til 9 p. m.

Goldstone, head of the National Council of Jewish Women's overseas service department, who returned from a six-week inspection tour of the organization's overseas activities. The Council representative, who interviewed numerous applicants for Council scholarships, as well as officials in the three countries, said continuing needs in Fiance and Italy and the acute shortages in Israel had emphasized the value of the organization's service programs in these lands. "In Israel, the Minister of Education stressed the need for nursery school teachers; the Minister of Welfare, the need for social workers; the Ministry of Health, the need for public health muses."
