United Israel Campaign Concludes in Uruguay Montevideo (JTA) The United Israel Campaign for 1949 was concluded here with a mass meeting at which it was reported that the fund-raising drive raised ten percent less than in the previous year. Notwithstanding the economic crisis prevailing in the country, the Jews of Uruguay contributed to the United Israel Campaign for 1949 about S600.000. Race Relations to be Topic at BAP Group Meeting In line with Brotherhood Week the Business and Professional chapter will present William V. Kelley as speaker at its regular meeting to be held Tuesday, Feb.

14 at 8:15 p.m. at the Hotel Wisconsin. Mr. Kelley, who will discuss "Cross Currents in Race is president of the Interracial Federation of Milwaukee County, a member of the mayor's Commission on Human Rights," and executive secretary of the Milwaukee Urban League. The program will include a group of young singers who are members of the choir at St.

Szold and B4I Groups Business and Professional Women's group of Hadassah will meet together with the Henrietta Szold group on Tuesday evening, Feb. 21 at the Milwaukee Art Institute auditorium, 772 N.

Jefferson st. Dramatic production depicting cultural life in Israel today will highlight the annual joint meeting. Mrs. Peter Kazlov, Szold pro. gram chairman, is author of the play.

"A Night in Nahal," which features members of both Hadassah groups in the production and cast. The program is being presented under the joint auspices of Mrs. Kazlov and Miss Eva Kohn. program chairman for the group. Mrs.

Ernst Herf is director of the play. Other members of the production staff include Mrs. Milton Vogel, dance director: Mrs. Morris Sadoff, musical director: Mrs. Sol Schwartz, pianist: and Miss Sally Sisseiman, soloist.

Welfare Board Takes Over Part of USO New York (JTA) The lional Jewish Welfare Board Na-will continue its traditional program lor Jewish personnel in the peacetime armed forces and veterans' hospitals, following the deactivation of the U.S.O. as of this week, it was announced here by Frank L.

Weil, president of the JWB. Mrs. Weil emphasized that despite the fact suspension of operations by the U.S.O. of which the Jewish Welfare Board has been an operating agency, means the loss to the JWB of anv further U.S.O. funds, the JWB will continue to meet in full the responsibility for service to the Jews in the armed forces.

At the same time, Mr. Weil pointed out that the 1950 budget of $1,474,485. which the JWB adopted last October, will require immediate reconsideration in the light of the unanticipated financial burden which the organization must meet because of the suspension of the U.S.O. February meetings of all Hadassah groups will highlight the Hadassah supplies department through which the Hadassah institutions and many other Israeli institutions arc supplied with linens, baby layettes, drugs and many other items. Supplies showers will be conducted by all the groups this month and the items very much needed are: bed linens, layette articles, towels, and men's work clothes including overalls, socks, and underwear.

Those desiring to contribute cash at the showers instead of materials may do so and this will be used the best advantage through the vast purchasing power of the New York office of Hadassah Supplies. Lake Park and Nurlh Shore The Lake Park and North Shore groups will meet jointly on Feb. 15 at 12:30 p.m. at the Knickerbocker hotel. A dessert luncheon will precede the meeting.

Mrs. Louis Weiss, hospital supplies chairman of Lake Park, and Mmes. Paley Phillips and Meyer Iliken of North Shore, will be" in charge of the shower and will exhibit some of the items which have been sewed and knitted by members of their committees. Mrs. Perry Urich, president of Lake Park, will preside at the meeting.

In commemoration of Brotherhood Week the invocation will be given by Mis. Adele V. Holtz. past president of Altrusa. an active chairman of the Milwaukee Committee for Israel.

Mrs. Elmer Winter will explain the significance of World Jewish Child's Dav, which has bien set for Sunday. Feb. 19. Dr.

Mandcl Sheiman of Chicago will be the progra.n speaker. Dr. Sherman received his M.D. from Rush Medical College and his Ph.D. in psychology trom the University of Chicago.

From 192t! to 1931 he was director of the Washington Child Research Center in Washington, D. C. and since that time has been Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Chicago. Hi Mount The Pabst Blue Ihhbon Hall will be the scene of the meeting of the Hi Mount group at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb.

Ivan Weinstein will be held. Rosalind Goldstein Bell, widely known local vocaist, will sing a group of Jewish songs in observance of Jewish music month. Mrs. Bell, a member of the Temple Emanu-El B'ne Jcshurun choir, has appeared on many programs both locally and in numerous neighboring communities. The second feature will be a showing of a film entitled "Sons of a technicolor production starring Claude Raines in the role of Chaim Solomon, a noted Jew who contributed a great deal to the successful conduct of the Revolutionary War.

Mrs. Max B. Anton, president, will preside. Sherman Park Sherman Park group will open its meeting on Thursday, Feb. 16 in the Rose Room of Temple Beth Israel, with a dessert luncheon at 12:45 p.m.

Mrs. Alvin Plotkin, Hadassah supplies chairman, and Mrs. Mary Goldman, an active member of this committee, will be in charge of the supplies shower and will report on the work of their department. June Shielman, charming young Milwaukee born vocalist, now of Chicago, will present a group of songs which will include some Jewish numbers in which she ex-cells. Miss Shielman has made many radio appearances both in New Shipping Line Begins Operations New York (JTA) The freighter Meir Dizengoff sailed for Israel, inaugurating a new U.

transport service. The vessel was loaded with foodstuffs, machinery, trucks and piping, most of which had been purchased in this country with funds provided under the American loan to the Jewish state. The vessel Jackstar, a Panamanian flag ship, left here with cargo and passengers for Haifa. This is the vessel's first trip to an Israel port since July 12, 1948 when her crew unloaded cargo in the port of Tel Aviv while Arab planes were bombing shipping and harbor installations. The crew and vessel were under fire for six days, but were never hit.

Scientists Study Use of Radioisotopes Oak Ridge, Tenn. (JTA) Three New York scientists are studying here the techniques of using radioisotopes in research, it was revealed. They are Dr. S. Steven Brodie.

Associate in Research at the Jewish Memorial hospital; Dr. Seymour L. Halpern, Welt Fellow in Research Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital; and Alex Meshbane, chemist at Fleischman, Burd and Co. Dr. Brodie plans to use radioisotopes in bone, liver and tumor studies.

Dr. Halpern will use them in metabolism studies. Mr. Meshbane plans to use radioisotopes in medical therapy. The new Yorkers are among 32 scientists enrolled in the twelfth in a series of one-month courses in radioisotope techniques offered by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies.

The Institute, comprised of 24 Southern universities, conducts a broad program of research, training, and education in the nuclear science through a contract with the Atomic Energy Commission. Murderers of Vilna Jews Get Life Terms Wuerzburg, Germany (JTA) Martin Weiss and August Bering, commandants of the Vilna Ghetto during the Nazi occupation, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a German court here following their conviction on charges of responsibility for and participation in the mass murder of 30.000 Jews. The two, instrumental in the liquidation of the entire population of the Vilna Ghetto, were also accused of personally murdering many Jews. One prosecution witness, a Jewish mother, accused Weiss of having personally shot her child while she was carrying it in her arms. He respects the conviction of others in matters of custom and religion." Fund Raising Affair Set by Sholom Aleihcem Sholom Aleichem lodge and chapter will hold their annual fund raising affair on Saturday evening, Feb. 18, at the Stratford hotel. IRVING I'GENT This affair will be in the form of a dance and concert.

Music for dancing will be furnished by Irving Ugent and his orchestra. Mr. Ugent is well known for his typical Jewish music as well as modern American music. The concert is being arranged by Jacob Ugent and will introduce artists from Chicago who will present Jewish songs, recitations and dramatic and humorous sketches. All members and friends are invited to attend this affair.
