Glen Rock Gazette TM JULY 30, 2004 GLEN ROCK HIGH SCHOOL named assistant and until then continue in his role as the New Milford High School Athletic Director, a position he's held for five years. Purciello, who currently resides in Oakland, knew of Glen Rock primarily because of its strong athletic program; GRHS basketball fans and former team members may remember Purciello as Garfield High School's head basketball coach many years ago. It was then, when Purciello was teaching history at Garfield, that thoughts of working as a school administrator first entered his mind. He said Glen Rock High School was one that presented itself as a role model to surrounding towns, including New Milford. "Glen Rock is one of the nicer schools which New Milford tried to emulate," he said.

"I'm really excited for this opportunity." Purciello, a Lyndhurst native, said he always pursued teaching as a career, concentrating on the subject he is most passionate about, U.S. history. He graduated from Jersey City State College and received his master's degree in school administration from Mont-clair State University. His first job, teaching elementary education in Paterson, convinced him to move to the high school level, where he stayed for 18 years. "I really enjoy working with teenagers they're more mature, you can talk to them," he said.

"I like being able to break things down to their simplest elements to make them understand it's fun." i principal Garfield High School, will continue being a disciplinarian at Glen Rock, a role Purciello said he's become comfortable performing. An advocate of progressive discipline, he believes students learn respect by adhering to school rules and should be punished if they fail to follow these rules. "I try to make discipline educational and do it quickly it's part of the job," Purciello said. "Progressive discipline teaches students the association between what they did, what was wrong and why." Superintendent of Schools Patrick Fletcher said Purciello's way of thinking is closely in line with that of the administration.
