Eugene "Gene" Jellison Eugene "Gene" Jellison, 69, Salina, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996, at his home. Ryan Mortuary, Salina, is handling arrangements. M. Jost MARION David M.

Jost, 87, Marion, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at St. Luke Living Center, Marion. Mr. Jost was born Jan.

31, 1909, at Hillsboro and was a resident of Marion since 1975. He was a chaplain and a member of Eastmoor FROM PAGE A1 graduated from Salina Central High School in 1978; his wife, Belinda, 38; and their children, Derrick, 2, and Amanda Shafer, 15 were on their way to a Christmas with Doug's parents, Don and Evelyn Amend, 2323 Edgehill. But their van was struck in the side by the pickup truck Pixler was driving, the patrol said. The van vaulted a guard rail, rolled and landed in Dry Creek, which rushed into the upside-down van and submerged the family headfirst under three feet of water. Pixler grabbed Amanda's hand, helped her to the bank and told her to head for the headlights up on the road.

The headlights belonged to Rick Hunt, owner of Hunt Construction, 906 W. Crawford, who saw a peculiar flash about a mile down Simpson Road as he headed to his Saline County home. Hunt was one of three Salina area residents who helped save the lives of the family and possibly Pixler, the patrol said. Hunt and Ed Schardein, Woodbine, who stopped a couple of minutes after Hunt, worked together to help the family up the embankment after Pixler pulled them out one by one. A fourth resident, Greg Morgan, 373 N.

Simpson Road, who lives near the scene of the accident, arrived soon after and helped as well. Schardein and Morgan couldn't be reached for comment. 'Just give me the baby' As soon as Pixler helped Amanda out of the water, he went back to the window, where Belinda was yelling and holding Derrick above the water so he wouldn't drown. Pixler called for the 2-year-old over and over. When Belinda finally complied, Pixler took Derrick in his arms and asked him if he was OK.

Derrick answered by sputtering and beginning to sob. Pixler then stuck him in his coat. "It seemed to take forever for her to hand over the child," he said. Pixler waded back and told Belinda to push a large chunk of ice away from her body. When she did, he grabbed her hand and pulled her from the vehicle.

He went over and helped her to the embankment, where she took Hunt's hand. Hunt led her up the embankment and took her to his truck, where Amanda was waiting, and where there was shelter from the 12-degree weather and heat to warm them after being trapped for several minutes in the ice-cold water. By this time, Doug had managed to unbuckle his seat belt and stick his head above the water. Pixler helped calm Doug, who later said his thoughts about a scene from "An Officer and a Gentleman" helped as well, by telling him the water wouldn't get any higher. Pixler then crawled up the bank and collapsed.

When he was asked if he was OK, he felt a sharp pain, A three-inch bulge was sticking out his left arm. His body was: bruised, and lacerations were all over his face. He had to pick glass out of his beard from sticking his face in the broken windows of the van. "All I tried to do was help anyway I could," he said. "I don't really remember a whole lot of it because I was in such a daze." A flash in the night Hunt wasn't sure what had happened until he saw Pixler's crumpled truck sitting on the road.

He got out of his truck, trying to see through the blackness of the county road, when he spotted a shivering, bleeding girl crawling up the creek's embankment. Amanda told Hunt she needed help. Hunt called 911 and drove his truck down the ditch to shine his headlights into the creek, where he discovered the van floating upside down and Pixler. He could hear the family's screams as they struggled to escape. By the time the Kansas Highway Patrol and ambulance arrived, Belinda and the family were in Hunt's truck.

"These people were freezing," Hunt said. "They were in my truck a half an hour as the paramedics were checking them out. I have been drying my truck for the last two nights with all the water and blood. I'm just glad I saw the girl there. If I hadn't seen the girl, I wouldn't have known they were down there.

"I would want to be treated the same way if my family was down there. We were just doing what we were supposed to do." Dave Weed, the trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol who first arrived on the scene, said he's convinced the family would have died if Pixler hadn't helped and Hunt and the others hadn't stopped. He said he would write a letter to his troop commander explaining the heroic efforts of the four. Morgan even jumped in the water to ensure that no one else; was in the van. "I don't know if they want some: kind of award," Weed said.

they did everything. They went way above and beyond what they had to do. If no one had been there, when the water is that cold, it zaps you in a hurry. "We don't advocate doing what these people did. But without their help, things could have gotten real bad real fast." Doug Amend, who suffered a broken collarbone and bruises in the crash, said the family was doing well.

The children had some stitches but were OK, and Derrick got a new pair of glasses. Belinda has a collapsed lung and will stay at Salina Regional Health Center for a couple more days. "I don't think Belinda or Der-. rick would have been able to get out without help," Amend said. "They didn't have to stop, and that guy didn't have to help, but they did, and we're very grateful."
