SPORTS VOLLEYBALL Eleventh-seeded Cutters take state title BY EDWARD KENSIK Correspondent Peter Zisa pointed to the Bergen County tournament as the team's turning point of the season and key to the state run. The team made it to the semi-finals in the county tourney. "When we made the Bergen County semi-finals and beat Rutherford we gained confidence going into the state tournament," said Zisa. Fair Lawn (22-8) was the 11th seed in the Group 3 bracket while Mendham was the fifth seed. Zisa said that teams did not think the Cutters were a legit title threat throughout the 2007 campaign.

"I think all season long people did not respect us," he said. It is not over yet for the Lady Cutters who move into the play-in game for the Tournament of Champions (TOC) as they face Bogota, the Group 1 seed, on Thursday at Hackensack at 6 p.m. A win against Bogota would send them to this weekend's TOC match against number-one seed IHA at William Paterson. FAIR LAWN Fair Lawn senior Cindy Okereke clutched the Group 3 state championship trophy on Saturday after the Lady Cutters won the high school volleyball title at William Paterson University. "This is amazing," she said of the title win.

The senior hitter was a major part of her team's Cinderella run to the state championship. Okereke had eight kills to lead the Lady Cutters as they defeated Mendham in three games, 20-25, 25-14 and 25-12. Amy Sharlow was the leader for Fair Lawn in assists with 28 while Tracy Wright added 21 digs. Nicole Sisco, Chelsea Stahl and Kasey Hen-necke contributed to the offensive effort against Mendham.
