193 AT THE MOVIES Gunderson to Quit Premier Indicates Finance Chief to Prepare Budget; Bennett Probable Successor By FRED McNEJL From The Vancouver Provlnc Victoria Rureatj Sht Lived Woy I No Woman Ever ji Should! I Jeanne Craln 1 I i Dnor a m. 9 VICTORIA A formal announcement from Frrmier Bennett Monday appears to indicate Finance Minister the story of his life. Since he's still playing for Los Angeles Rams, the story is incomplete He acts himself, with assistance from Lloyd Nolan, Joan Vohs and a roster of football stars that Vancouver Lions will never get under contract in a million years. "Vicki" is a remake of "1 Wake l'p Screaming" of 1941 vintage, not as chilling, but still good for an exciting evening. Jeanne Craln has the original Betty Grabel part; Jean Peters subs for the late Carole Landis and Richard Boone useS some of the mannerisms and technique which the late Laird Cregar put into the mentally-ill detective.

They've changed the story too. In this one, the cop did not do the deed. doors a.m. ricT. AT 11:07, 1:15, 3:23.

Suddenly, instead of a warm, sympathetic character, Mr. Average becomes a man with a message straight from the Chamber of Commerce and the Retail Credit Association. It looks as if Hollywood tried something, that being to put on the screen a real honest-to-gosh wage-earner with problems and then got scared that maybe people didn't want to see themselves as others see them. Montgomery 'lift Anne Baxter "I CONFESS" AI'T "MAN IN THE WHITE Sl'IT" 4aaaiX flat aJaawj emAn toria by-election the Hon. Eiiur M. Gunderson offered his resig-! nation as minister of finance but was invited and pressed by the Premier to carry on to complete the estimates and to join in the presentation of the Government's submission to the Federal Government. "Mr. Gunderson is the last man in B.C.

who would desire to carry on as finance minister without a seat in the Assembly. The minister has followed, and the government will certainly continue to follow well-established parliamentary procedure." SEVERAL TIMES The Premier has made several similar statements since Mr. Gunderson was defeated at the polls for the second time Nov. 24. But he still declines to say point blank whether Mr.

Gurjderson will resign jrj whether the government will try to find a new seat for hi.n in a by-election. Either course still open to the Premier under the guarded terms of his press statement. But it is considered doubtful if Mr. Gunderson will continue under any circumstances. He has never been fond of 'he rough and tumble of elections and reliable reports here ny he wanted to resign after his defeat in the June general election.

DO JOB HIMSELF An unusual aspect of the Premier's announcement is the indication that Mr. Gunderson will prepare a budget which oe will not be in the Legislature to deliver. Premier Bennet will probably take over the finance ministry himself. His diligent search for some precedent under which he could keep Gunderson and still not violate basic principles of Parliament, indicates he doesn't think there is other suitable material in his party. Lord, appointed to investigate the 11-week strike of woodworkers in interior B.C., plans to begin hearings in Prince George next Tuesday. Hearings will be public and all parties will give evidence under oath. There will be two enquiries, one dealing with the dispute between the IWA and Northern Interior Lumbermen's Association, and the second dealing with the Interior Lumber Manufacturing Association, which represents operators in the southern interior. His appointment followed the IWA's rejection of settlement offer made on Friday by the northern interior operators. The proposal, calling for limited union security and a 5-cent wage boost effective next April was termed "unrealistic by union president Joe Morris.

Red Skelton, in a real job of acting, makes a subdued, conscientious attempt to be convincing as a human being rather than a clown.

Skelton fans who roll in the aisle when their man raises an eyebrow, are in for a walloping surprise. This may be comedy, and there are laughts galore in it, but way down deep, it isn't funny. The story from the satirical pen of humorist Max Shulninn, is a a magazine writer who want all troubles to be little ones When he gets a job, he hopes he'll struggle back to solid fi-n a i a 1 ground. But no, his wife (Jean Haeen) has other ideas. First it's a baby, then a house they can't afford, then bills, bills and more bills and no bank balance.

Harrassed and browbeaten at home, Skelton is assigned to do a story about the Joneses who keep up with the other Joneses. His editor (Charles Dingle) be-lives in prudence, temperance, thrift. Doing the story, Skelton loses his wife, gets her back when she agrees to move back to their New York' tenement apartment, but then he wakes up to what she has been pounding into him "there's no such thing as security in this shaky world, only faith and courage." Half his courage roused, Skelton tells off his bss and goes out to drink champagne with his DU WO PriendS KOD aaa Lily lYCin Ot $OUU A robbery in which a city man lost $300 shortly after midnight is being investigated. James Gardner, 1245 West Georgia, told police he was beaten and robbed of the money and two cases of beer by two 'friends" as they walked between two Cordova street buildings. He was treated at General Hospital for shoulder injuries.
