Center at Laurel Hill County Park in Secaucus, which launches adventurous boaters in kayaks and canoes onto the Hackensack River in the heart of the Meadowlands for solo trips or guided tours. On Saturdays and Sundays, kayaks and canoes can be rented at the center for $25 per paddler ($15 per passenger in canoes) for solo trips and slightly more for a guided tour. In addition, the Riverkeeper, for the first time this year, is opening an additional paddle center at Overpeck Park for paddling and tours on Overpeck Lake. "The first thing you experience is that you're on deep water; and there is a lot of water moving beneath your boat," says Hugh Carola, program director at Hackensack Riverkeeper, of the trips that launch from Laurel Hill. "There are often small swells and small waves created by wind and tide.

Then you leave the river and enter the Sawmill Creek Wildlife Management Area. Its open water, creeks, mudflats, reeds and Spartina marshes are the habitat of a wide diversity of estuarine creatures from invertebrates to apex predators. Wildlife-watching is a highlight for many paddlers." The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, headquartered in Lyndhurst, also offers guided canoe tours launching on select Saturdays throughout the summer launching from Mill Creek Point Park and Laurel Hill Park in Secaucus as well as River Barge Park in Carlstadt. Tours run $15 per person and explore Mill Creek Marsh, the Sawmill Creek Wildlife Management Area and more.
