September 12, 1958 THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE 13 more Jews in tennis, bi.t, again, not in the top classes. The athlete The Jewish Year In Sports 4Pur Year Dei Argentina! By Asher Mibashan By Harold U. Ribalow pressed his government's good intentions towards Israel and local Jewry and it may be hoped that the new political constellation in this country will make a step towards progress in all fields. THE YEAR THAT has passed has been a rich one for Argentine Jewry perhaps more so because of general events in Argentine life coming from the well-to-do family finds himself without the status that occurred to the slum-dweller. Once, the Jewish lad from the East Side was a hero when he became a headline fighter.

The Jewish boy raised in Westchester or Long Island does not go into the fight, and if he did. he would not be the neighborhood stalwart that Benny Leonard was in New-York or Barney Ross in Chicago. In addition, football, which once yielded many Jewish stars, is no longer the big sport it was. for than for particularly Jewish rea sons. In mid-1957, there were con stituent elections which already gave an inkling of the nation's political trends, though the constit uent assembly itself dissolved later Critics of the English-Jewish press often assert that articles and news items appearing in this press do not, as a rule, emphasize the non-favorable aspects of Jewish life.

As sports is part of Jewish life, the argument runs, Jewish sports stars are played up beyond their abilities and Jewish writers have a tendency to overrate Jewish athletes. Of course, regular readers of this press are aware that this attitude is inaccurate and that there is a far greater sense of balance than, the critics say there is. This writer, whose regular sports column appears in the English-Jewish periodical press, can personally attest that when the sports beat is "slow" it is no mystery to steady readers of the column; it is pointed out; bewailed, perhaps, but stressed. And when a year is a education is now gaining more "poor" one, from a sports viewpoint, it is not built up as a good year. These remarks are a prelude to an annual survey which must make clear that this last year has had its high moments, but they have been few indeed.

Seldom have Jewish athletes been less dominating. And, what is more significant, there seems to be no improvement to look forward to in the near future. Jews Shun Pro Sports Before I go into details, I think some reasons for this trend should be given. The American Jew, as he reaches the rungs of the higher middle class, no longer goes into sports. Certainly not into prize lighting, or baseball or other popular sports.

There are more Jews golfing, but not professionally, and without having achieved much more than the cancellation of Peron's constitution of The stress, and Jewish boys in college, from the better homes, refuse to go out for football, and the poorer boys, in the state and city colleges, here with enormous enthusiasm and the general press joined in editorials and columns, pictures and cables, in emphasizing the uniqueness of the event. Exhibitions of Israeli postal stamps, a broadcast, a Bible contest, a gala concert led by the great Argentine conductor Juan Jose Castro, who presented modern Israeli music, and many other events gave brilliance to the celebrations which impressed Jews and non Jews alike with the great achievements of the young AS IT HAPPENED, Israel's anniversary coincided with Dr. Frondizi's taking over the Presidency, and the pomp, and display of official affairs centered attention on this more American issue. In the Presidential change-over Israel was represented by its Interior Minister, Israel Baryehuda, who also inaugurated the 1958 United Israel Appeal. Some Jewish circles feel that Jews are too well represented in the new Frondizi administration.

Though others hold that Jews may, in their capacity of Argentine citizens, chose their political activity at will many Jews fear that this is "des Guten zu viol," and that any bad turn may harm Jewry in general. BE THAT AS IT may, the fact is that the Under Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Dr. David Ble-jer; the president of the Central Bank. During July, Buenois Aires became a continental center for Latin-American Jewry. Several international Jewish and Zionist conferences considered problems of particular interest to Spanish and Portuguese speaking Jewry.

Among these conferences, the most important was the third Latin American convention of the World Jewish Congress, to which 150 delegates from 11 South American countries came. OTHER CONFERENCES during to month were held by the Ichud Olami of the Labor Party, and by the Progressive branch of the General Zionists. Buenos Aires Jewry must become more aware of its role as a metropolis or the smaller Jewish settlements on the continent and now take a more active participation in their fate. A pleasant visit which left fond memories was one paid by Joint vice president Moses Leavitt, who surveyed the situation on the continent and contacted many official and private circles here during his mission. Recently, Dr.

Carlos Israels, head of the United Hias Service, contacted the Frondizi administration with regard to immigration possibilities and his conclusions were given at a cautiously hopeful press conference. Dr. Frondizi, in a private audience, confirmed his earlier statements regarding immigration and it can be accepted that the doors of the country will open for a certain number of Hungarian and Egyptian Jewish refugees after many-years when immigration was practically barred to Jews. Some recrudescence of anti-Semitism has been observed lately, but in isolated instances. Nonetheless, "Help the Fatherland-kill a Jew" posters appeared in some suburbs.

This, however, should not be taken as expression of a genuine aggravation of the situation. This writer would ascribe it rather to the fact that the "sudden" recovery of freedom of speech and print has loosened some hitherto hidden but not forgotten instincts. THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL of San Martin, where such posters were affixed, held an official session expressing its complete disavowal of such "un-Argentine" excesses. The central representative body of Argentine Jewry, Delegacion de Aspicaciones Israel-itas Argentinas in DAIA alerted the Interior Ministry to all signs of anti-Semitism, and to its connections with imported Nazi and Arab propaganda agents and materials. DAIA also made representations to the Foreign Minister Dr.

Few Jews In Basketball, Tennis Basketball, which once was called a Jewish sport because of the predominance of Jewish stars and teams, has only Dolph Schayes as a professional star and Lenny Rosenbluth as a comer. In the college headlines, there will be a Jewish player once in a while, but not frequently. The new stars are huge, seven-foot Negro boys or farm lads from the Mid or Far West.

Jews don't seem to grow that tall, at least not yet, and as a result, basketball has become a minor, instead of a major, Jewish game. Tennis, a "social" sport which never had many Jewish players, did boast, a few years ago, of Dick Savitt and Herb Flam, both of the top grade. Now Savitt is retired and plays only intermittently if brilliantly and Flam, after a breakdown, has not been heard from. The other Jews in the game, Sam Match, are okay, but of the second or third rank. The only important emergence of the last year has been that of a star in chess; at the same time, for the first time in memory, there is no outstanding Jewish boxer in the ring in this country although Alphonse Halimi, the North African-French Jew, is a champion.

AS IS WELL KNOWN, the general elections brought Dr. Frondizi to power, with a whopping majority as a result of a combination of most diverse and even divergent forces, principal among them the pro-eronist working masses. As the Aramburu regime had reinstated the fullest freedom of speech and press a freedom which many Argentines, among them a good number of newspapermen had forgotten how to use the electoral contest was a most lively propagandistic display.

It should be stressed that no undue anti-Semitism showed up in this phase of the country's democratization that is no more than usual. An interesting feature of local Jewish life was the appearance last year of the Spanish-language Jewish daily "Amaneccr" (Dawn) which was very well received and seemed to satisfy a genuine need for those Jews, especially the younger generation, who do not speak Yiddish. However, weak financing forced Amaneccr to stop appealing by the end of April and it i. only to be hoped that efforts now under way to reopen it again will meet with success. The visit of an Israeli ten-man parliamentary delegation to Argentina was one of the outstanding events of the year, not only for local Jewry, but also for the official and unofficial contacts established.

The deputies divided up into several groups to visit various provincial centers and took home a rather complete picture of this young and energetic Jewish settlement, whose love of Zion is one of its most characteristic traits. The mission included representatives of every Israeli political party, with the exception of the Communists, and this added to the interest it awakened here. THE VISIT of the Israeli Trade and Industry Minister, Pinhas Sapir, produced friendly echoes in government circles and a trade agreement between both countries was initialled, and later signed. Another visit of great, though different, import was that of Prof. Ernst David Bcrgmann, scientific right hand of Premier Ben-Gurion and head of Israel's Atomic Energy Commission.

He was able to establish contacts with his counterpart here and to exchange useful information on the work "ato-mically small" countries can profitably carry on. Young Bobby seems to be quite normal and ordinary, except when it comes to the chessboard.

His victories so intrigued the entire world that when he became the national champion this past year, he became one of the most written-about sports personalities in the world. It is entirely likely that in time he will rank with the greatest of the masters, although he has a way to go yet. For example, Mikhail Botvinnik, another Jewish chess master a real grandmaster regained his world title from Vassily Smyslov this year, and Bobby cannot be ranked with him until a few more years go by and he has an opportunity to meet, face to face, players like Botvinnik or Smyslov. For that matter, it is still debatable whether he can lick Reshevsky in a match, although he has done well against him in tourney play. The history of the Jew in chess is a rich one as it used to be in boxing.

But while prize fighting now has no Jews to speak of, chess still is a "Jewish" game to a large extent. Fischer joins a distinguished list of notable chess mas'ers and to this degree, the sports year has not been a dead loss. Benny Leonard is still called the finest of the lightweights and Barney Ross a blaz-ingly brilliant welterweight. The Halls of Fame in boxing and baseball are bound to have added to them some Jewish names that didn't used to be there. So that an annual survey requires that some mention be made of the growing stature of the athletes of the past. Sports In Israel In Israel, sports are growing apace and this year baseball is being added to the games the Israelis play. The citizens of the ten-year-old democracy are competing more and more all over the world and even if the Israeli representatives are not yet of major stature, it is not impossible that with the passage of the years, the Jews of Israel will fill in where the Jews of America are falling behind.

It is not likely to happen soon. Israeli tennis players, for instance, are appearing more frequently all over the world, but they are not yet really-good. And as there are no boxers in Israel (professional prize fighting does not exist in the Jewish State to its credit, most will say), there isn't anything to look forward to here.
