A speech lecontly delivered by Senator Fryo to tho Republicans of Portland, contains tho following on (ho above subject: I do not know that 1 over loved England particularly. 1 do not think sho treated us well in tho war. Indeed, I think that, considering that wo woro hor daughter, sho treated us very badly, and sympathized with what seemed to hor to bo our downfallj but oven in mi oneiny I think 1 can seo what is worth of admiration. Tho caro which England has for hor citizens, wherever they may bo located, is marvellous and admirable. It is worth something lo bo a citizen of Great Britain, as much as it was in tho olden days to bo a Roman citizen.

Thoro comes to my mind at this moment anil you will remember it, that wonderful little episode in hor history where King Theodore seized a young man by tho name of Campbell, without any justification of law, and put him into tho Fortress of Magdala, about -1000 feet above tho level of tho sea. Word was sont to Great Britain that ho was thoro without tho authority of law, and Great Britain demanded his release. King Theodore refused to release him. In ItO days' time from that refusal, 10,000 English soldiers and Sepoys woro on board ships which, with their white wings spread, sailed down upon tho coast. Thoy landed upon that coast; thoy marched GOO miles, through swamp and morass, under tho burning sun.

Thoy inarched up tho mountain heights and gave battle to King Theodore and his forces. Thoy beat down tho iron gates and the walls of stono, and reached down into tho dungeon and took that ono British citizon out and carried him down tho mountain side, across tho swamps and morasses and put him on board tho white-winged ships and carried him homo to England in safety. Applause. It cost England twenty millions of pounds, and mado General Napier Lord Napier of Magdala. Was not that a great thing for a great country to do? An oyo sharp enough to seo ono of its thirty millions of people, an arm strong enough to stretch across tho ocean and morasses and pluck him as a brand from tho burning and carry him homo in safety.

Who would not dio for a count ry that can do that? Jfttivkenbury, 2s. 8., Jiullrtin. ADVERTISING NOTES. Root Boer on draught at Benson, Smith Si C. J.
