September 27, 1946 THE WISCONSIN JEWISH CHRONICLE Repatriated Polish Jews Apply for Return to Russia Jews Outside of Germany Can Claim Italy to Admit 500 Jewish Orphans Rome (JTA) The Italian Government informed the Union of Jewish Communities that it will admit 500 Jewish orphans from refugee camps in various countries. UNRRA has completed establishment of a camp for displaced persons near Ravena. It is believed that the camp is being prepared to house some of the 25,000 Jewish DP's whom the United States Government is anxious to transfer from the U. S. zone in Germany.

In connection with the expected arrival of these refugees, a representative of the Joint Distribution Committee has left for the northern part of Italy to make the necessary arrangements for their reception. to the killing of four Jews at the Polish-Soviet border at Przemysl by a group of armed men who first undertook to smuggle the Jews across the frontier. Other Jews in the party succeeded in escaping, after they realized that the smugglers intended to rob and kill them. It is believed in Jewish circles here that the four Jews were not the first to be murdered by smugglers who have been luring Polish Jews to the Soviet frontier under promises to get them into Russia for a small fee. Several groups of Jews are known to have made arrangements to cross into Soviet territory and have not been heard from since they left Warsaw some time ago.

Warsaw (JTA) As a result of continued anti-Jewish terrorism in Poland, Several hundred Polish Jews who were repatriated from the USSR have ap plied to the soviet consulate in Warsaw for re-admission to Russia, it was learned here. The Soviet consulate has so far granted only a very limited number of visas to these applicants, the majority of whom are told that it will take several months before their applications are approved by cpntral authorities in Moscow. Return Illegally Some of the applicants, unwilling to wait several months, are trying to find their way back to Soviet territory illegally. This led Haganah Sfaris Campaign to Crush Extremist Groups Irgun and Stern Gang Denounce Leaders and Haganah's "Treachery" Tel Aviv (JTA) The Haganah and the Irgun 7.vai Leumi engaged in a bitter exchange over their underground radios, while the Stern Group posted angry placards in the streets of this city, following the first step in the Haganah's campaign to crush the extremist groups. Haganah speakers interrupted programs in theatres throughout Tel Aviv to appeal to the audiences not to contribute money to either of the dissident groups and urging them not to be coerced by threats.

The Haganah radio, "Voice of Israel," issued similar appeals. Simultaneously, the Irgun exploded pamphlet bombs in the streets, containing leaflets calling for support of their program. How Ion Hince you were "liberated" from Huchenwald? 600,000 European Jews Will Face Severe Winter WW Seized Property Application to AMG Will Result in Immediate Action Munich (JTA) Nearly 250,000,000 Reichsmarks worth of property, the great bulk of which was formerly owned by Jews, has been seized by the American Military Government in Bavaria and is currently being administered under the strict supervision of its property control division, it was learned.

Military government officials told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Jewish property totals about seven percent of all proper ties seized by the American forces. The properties are administered by a German custodian who reg- i ularly submits his books and ac- counts to the Americans. A military government spokes- man said that when a Jew now living outside of Germany writes I the A.M.G. stating that his former property was confiscated or sold under duress, the military govern- ment investigates the claim, and if the Jew's story is corroborated, the property is seized whether or not the present owner is consid- ered politically reliable. In thej case of a private home, the resi-; dent is not evicted but he must! pay rent to the American Military Government.

i The property is now being held in trust by the Americans pending the adoption of a final restitution law which is being drawn up now by German provincial officials and American military officers in Stuttgart and Berlin. Merge Offices In Bavaria Munich (JTA) The Bavarian; Government has combined the Of- fice of Jewish Affairs and the Of- fice of Politically Persecuted Per- sons into a single Commissariat for the Victims of Fascism, it was reported here. The new agency is headed by Dr. Philip Auerbach, a German Jew who was previously Bavarian Commissioner of Jewish Affairs. The merger plan is the outcome of a compromise between political and racial groups.

The displaced Jews feared a merger because of the political connotations attached to the political persecutees. They now feel, however, that Dr. Auerbach will preserve their interests. The strongest possibility exists, according to Jewish circles here, that the new commissariat will be- come heavily involved in politics, possibly affecting the administra- tion of Jewish affairs. Leaders of the political persecutees, for ex-; ample, are now involved in a con-; troversy with the Bavarian Min- istry of the Interior.

The political persecutees are said to be angry i because they were not consulted regarding Auerbach's appointment, but they appear willing to work with him. It is also learned that Dr. Auerbach is now working on a law which will exactly define political and racial persecutees. A law of that kind is necessary because persons not entitled to call themselves persecutees are receiving relief, while some legitimate persecutees are not. New York (JTA) The World Jewish Congress announced here that its secretary general, Dr.

A. Leon Kubowitzki, obtained an audience with King Gustav of Sweden to negotiate about the admission of Jewish refugees from ROSEN BLUM OF CALIFORNIA, the designer with the penchant for purity of line, does the cardigan in wool crepe. It charged that "for years the Haganah de- i nounced us to the police, now they raise public opinion against us." The broadcaster appealed for con- tributions, stating that "Haganah's budget is for treachery, while ours is to be used in the sacred fight against the enemy." Attack Dr. Weizmann The Stern Group placards de- nounced Dr. Weizmanr. and David Ben Gurion, asserting that neither they nor any other Jewish repre- sentatives who may participate in I the London conference has the right to speak for the Jewish peo- pie. "Their decisions will not be recognized," the posters added.

"Neither Attlee, Azzam Pasha nor Weizmann can decide the fate of i Jewish Palestine." Earlier, the Haganah announced in a broadcast that it would not co-operate with the authorities in rounding up members of the opposition groups. "Neither dissidents nor the authorities will drag us into a civil war," the announcer emphasized. Haganah pamphlets issued described the members of the two groups as "terrorists, gangsters, blackmailers and smugglers." The pamphlets asserted that the extremists are not supported by the Jewish community of Palestine, and added thai "the terrorists mob, smuggle and deal on the black market with stolon goods." Meanwhile, five armed men, reported to be members of the Irgun, invaded the offices of the Exporters Association in Tel Aviv and escaped with $24,000 worth of diamonds. French Willing to Admit DP's into Guiana New York (JTA) The French Government is prepared to consider the admission of Jewish refugees into French Guiana, it was reported here by the Free-land League for Jewish Territorial Colonization. Dr.

I. N. Steinberg, secretary-general of the League, who has just returned from a five-month tour of Europe, disclosed that the French Colonial Minister. Marius Moutet, notified him three weeks ago saying he would raise the question with his government of settling "a certain number" of displaced Jews in French Guiana. 29.95 New York (JTA) Some 600,000 Jewish survivors in Rumania, Hungary and Poland face the prospects of a severe winter unless means are found to increase the large-scale assistance which they are already receiving through the Joint uistriDution Committee, Dr.

Joseph Schwartz, J.D.C. European director, said at a press conference. Dr. Schwartz pointed out that i Rumania has suffered a disastrous crop failure and that as a result food prices are soaring beyond the rpjifh of the 335.000 Jews and that the J.D.C. must increase its aid to that country.

In Hungary, he declared, the J.D.C. has already spent $4,000,000 for aid this year for the 200,000 Jews there, but with the stabilization of currency the value of the dollar has decreased and relief funds will have to be increased from $500,000 in August to $750,000 in September. Repatriates Fleeing Declaring that 60.000 Jews have fled Poland since the July 4 pogrom at Kielce, he said that the remaining Jews are finding it increasingly difficult to rehabilitate themselves and to rebuild their future because of the "rampant anti-Semitism." He asserted that most of the Jews who were re patriated from the U.S.S.R. to Po- land during the Spring, have already moved out of the country, "The Jews of Eastern Europe are continuously on the move," he said, adding that the continuing I migration of at least one-sixth of Europe's 1,400,000 Jews is complicating the administration of relief. Commenting on this problem, Dr.

Schwartz said: "The J.D. C. is helping to relieve hardships and suffering for the people in flight by supplying food, clothing, medical care to those in transit and by establishing emergency re-! ccption centers along the routes. It is also dealing with govern-'. ments on the question of infil-! trees, but has in no sense "organ-i ized" migration anywhere." I The basic relief for the displaced persons in the camps and centers OR Elegance UNSURPASSED YS QUALITY SPLENDOR STYLING in Germany and Austria is the responsibility of the military authorities but J.D.C.

has been compelled to undertake a large-scale program of supplementary feeding, he revealed. "In the British zone of Austria." he said. "dis placed people are receiving a diet consisting of 800 calories a day, I which J.D.C. is supplementing by I 1,500 calories. In the American zone the United States Army sup-' plies 1,200 calories and J.D.C.

an i additional 1,000 calories. This! program for additional food for displaced persons in the camps has grown to the point where J.D.C. is shipping in as much as 600 tons monthly. "Unstinting praise must be given to the American military authorities for their understanding efforts in behalf of the displaced Jews," Dr. Schwartz concluded.

"The Army has been most sympathetic to these homeless people and has given fine cooperation to the program of the J.D.C." Rabbinical Council Airs Social Problems Denver (JTA) The newly-formed social justice commission of the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of America has released a statement defining its views on social questions, through its chairman, Rabbi Manuel Laderman of Den- vpr. The statement, signed by thirteen rabbis from communities in various parts of the United States, urged the Jewish people to respond to appeals for aid to Jews and urged the government to open the doors of the U. S. to the immigration of the displaced people of Europe. It also deplored labor-management strife, defended the right of labor to organize for "greater security and a better standard of living" and urged the acceptance of the five-day work week as an aid to Sabbath-observing Jews.

The statement further scored anti-Negro violence, called for the assurance of legal and human rights to Negroes and i advocated fair employment prac-i tices.
