The scroll says in part: "Your stay in Bombay among us is an event unique in the annals of Indian Jewry. Your activities for the spread of knowledge of the Torah mark an epoch in religious revival among us. With a profound scholar and an intimate friend like you, we part company with a heavy heart." Rabbi Heller is the author of several books, including "Ocivssey of a Faith," and "Epistle to an Apostate." He is a consultant to the Textbook Commission of the Synagogue Council of America and formerly was Director of Restitution of Jewish Cultural Property in Germany.

Noting the desire for more knowledge and information about Judaism, he established a Jewish library and reading room in Bombay and arranged for the first gift of books from friends in New York City. He organized an adult education class which began with 40 students and grew to more than 100 by the time he left India. A professor at a Bombay university is now carrying on this project.
